"Leadership and Career Summit" to be held in March |
On Thursday, March 22 and Friday, March 23, 2012, The Hill will host a "Leadership and Career Summit" for students and alumni. The two-day event will begin with the presentation of the 14th Annual Hill School Leadership Award on Thursday evening, which is a required event for all students. Faculty and staff are invited to attend this presentation. This year's recipient will be David Paton, M.D. '48, internationally renowned eye surgeon and creator of ORBIS, the non-profit flying eye hospital staffed by volunteer surgeons and designed for teaching modern eye care in developing nations.
On Friday, fifth and sixth form students will participate in “Career Day” where they will meet with 31 Hill alumni, all involved in various vocations and careers, who will share information about their lives. Biographies of all presenters will be made available soon. Later, students will attend the Internship Fair where they will have an opportunity to discuss and apply for internships offered by Hill alumni. While fifth and sixth formers attend Career Day, all third form students will attend a History of Art and Music field trip, and fourth form students will participate in a local community service project.

On January 18, 2012 we kicked off the Green Cup Challenge, a four week interschool challenge to reduce electricity usage and to increase environmental awareness. The challenge was launched in 2006 at Phillips Exeter Academy, Northfield Mount Hermon and the Lawrenceville and has increased to include over 115 schools from Besant Hill School in California to Taft in Connecticut. Last week, students, faculty and staff visited a kick-off in the student center and over 75 signed a pledge to reduce energy usage or reduce waste over the next four weeks. During required chapel on Sunday, January 15, over 94% of students had turned their lights off. Over the last four weeks, 29 students, faculty, and faculty children have collaborated to create the Hill’s entry for the Green Cup Challenge’s video contest. Starting February 2, we’ll be posting The Hill’s Green Cup Challenge Video on the School’s website. Please check out the video and vote for The Hill’s entry.
What is your office/department doing to save electricity? Academic Office: Space heaters are very energy intensive, using 750-1500 Watts/hour. Using foot warmers to help cut the chill in the winter months (foot warmers use 1/10 of the energy of a space heater) will help the Academic Office reduce energy usage. CFTA: Stage lighting is very energy intensive and so a typical 2-3 hour musical practice can utilize large amounts of electricity. However, students, faculty, and staff at the CFTA are limiting the number of lights used during rehearsals and making sure to turn off all lights after practices. Dean’s Office: Using foot warmers to help cut the chill in the winter months (foot warmers use 1/10 of the energy of a space heater). Dining Hall: Consolidating items in separate refrigerators over the long weekend to allow the dining service to power down a walk-in unit or two. Continuing to set up sustainable seating. Turning off three chandeliers and using fewer tables during buffet dinners and breakfasts, we save electricity and reduce water usage by the reducing the number of dirtied table cloths to be washed during the Green Cup Challenge. Facilities: Purchased a solar-powered trash compactor to replace the trash compactor near the daycare. Purchasing Energy Star qualified appliances when possible. Library: Utilizing day lighting on the first and third floor of the library. ISD: Beginning virtualization of servers. This will allow ISD to consolidate servers, ultimately reducing energy usage and improving efficiency and service. Modern Languages: Turning off computers in language lab during the long weekend. Moonlighting Cleaning Service: Staff reminded to turn out lights when leaving a room. Created and posted signs about the Green Cup Challenge and saving electricity.

Campus projects |
Below are a few campus enhancements taking place this winter and spring:
Currently the School is involved in a central cooling plant upgrade which consists of replacement of all air conditioning equipment. During the spring, the Alumni Chapel basement will be renovated thanks to the generosity of a Hill School alumnus who provided the funds for the project. Approximately, 1,000-square feet of raw space in the Chapel basement will be renovated to finished space for event preparation (such as a space for a bride and attendants to prepare before a wedding). In addition, the scope of the project will include installation of two lavatories, upgrade to the electrical service, installation of three fans in the ceiling of the main chapel upstairs, and a connecting stair between the basement and the main level.
During the summer months, there will be an overhaul done to the Ryan Library's HVAC system; an upgrade to the steam tunnels; and extensive renovation of Feroe House.

An invitation to TIM class |
Faculty and staff are invited to join the TIM Class in the AV Auditorium of the Ryan Library on February 17 and 24 (F, G, H, A, B, and C periods), as the third and new fourth formers present the pros and cons of the following topics: Cybersocializing: “Do the positive aspects of social networking sites outweigh the negative?” Cyberbullying: “Should schools and lawmakers do more to protect kids from cyberbullies?” Web 2.0: “Has Web 2.0 technology made this generation of students smarter than past generations?” Cheating: “Can the increase in academic cheating be blamed on the amount of pressure students feel to succeed?” Downloading (Mass Media): “Should the government cut the Internet connections of people who practice illegal file-sharing?” Cellphones in School: “Should cell phones be allowed in schools?” The assignment was a cumulative project where students had to read six articles (three articles per side of the situation) using the SIRS Research database, then used Blackboard’s wiki feature to gather their ideas together in a group. They also learned how to give a speech using APES!, and how to combine their knowledge into a presentation including a visual aid. If you have any questions or plan to attend, please contact either Julie Miran or Mary-Kate Najarian. Look forward to seeing you there. |
