| September 16 and 17 marked the first events of the year for this year’s Community theme. On Friday evening, internationally recognized artist Naomi Natale spoke to members of The Hill community about two projects she has created to help fight against the ongoing mass atrocities in Africa. Ms. Natale joined the fourth form for a reception following her talk. On Saturday, students had the day off from classes to participate in “Community Day,” during which each form did a separate community service project. Residents of the area were invited to join third form students for Yoga in the Park at nearby Manatawny Park for a free yoga session. Fourth form students set their focus on a broader sense of community, by participating in the "One Million Bones" and "Pinwheels for Peace" projects. Students made ceramic bones, which will become part of a massive art installation at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., and also crafted pinwheels based on the “Pinwheels for Peace" project that were displayed on the Quad on September 21, which is International Peace Day. Fifth form students participated in a wide variety of community service activities ranging from cleaning and painting at the Carousel facility to cleaning and organizing Pottstown Cluster’s food pantry. The Sixth form volunteered at Longview Center for Agriculture in Collegeville, which is a community Farm Hub of the non-profit organization, Greener Partners, containing 90 acres of certified organic farmland. In the middle of the week, sixth form students received their official Class of 2012 blazers that they ordered last spring. |
