| Solar panels installed in the Chapel
|
| Today The Hill took one more step toward becoming a “greener” campus. Thanks to a gift from the members of the Class of 2010, the Alumni Memorial Chapel will be outfitted with an 1800-watt solar panel system that will meet some of the Chapel’s electricity needs. The two-panel system will use solar energy to power the “Eternal Light,” the Chapel clock (and its light), and the light over Headmaster Meigs’ grave.
Installation of the solar panels began October 5, 2011 and was completed the next day. The panels were installed at the top of the Chapel’s turret, therefore they are not visible on the outside of the Chapel’s beautiful façade. Hill electricians, Mike Shaner and Brian Fritz, designed and built the frame for the solar panels from PVC piping, and installed the panels, battery power source, and connecting wires.
The Chapel was chosen as the first building on Hill’s campus to have solar power because of its importance to current Hill students, faculty and staff, and alumni. Situated at the west side of the Quad, the beloved Chapel is one of the centers of community life at The Hill. The Class of 2010 hopes its gift will “enlighten the Chapel and provide current students and alumni with an example of how they can be better stewards of the earth.” |
