Fall athletics teams prepare for PAISAA Championships
Beginning on Thursday, October 27 with a boys’ soccer match, six varsity teams will compete for the PAISAA State Championship in their respective sports. Joining boys’ soccer will be girls’ soccer, field hockey, boys’ golf, and the boys’ and girls’ cross country teams.

The boys’ soccer team earned the three seed in the 16-team tournament and will host Phelps school in the first round match on Thursday, October 27 at 4:30 p.m. on the track field. If the boys win, they also will host the second round match and face the winner of the Episcopal Academy/Friends Central match. The team currently has a 10-3-1 record (2-0 MAPL) and is riding a six-match unbeaten streak into both the State playoffs and the home stretch of MAPL competition.

The boys’ golf PAISAA Championship will be played at Hill’s home course, Brookside Country Club, on Saturday, October 29 at 11:30a.m. Beginning this year, the boys’ golf team is in a two-year “trial” as a fall sport, but also will play a spring varsity-only schedule to sustain our relationship with MAPL schools. A strong group of incoming players has meshed well with young returning players from last year’s team who returned to campus this fall with much more match experience to help guide the team to a strong 7-2 record heading into the championship tournament.

Both the boys’ and girls’ cross country teams also will compete in the State Championship on Saturday, October 29, at Belmont Plateau in Philadelphia. Leading the boys’ team is Quinn Davis ’12 (Pottstown, Pa.), who is having an outstanding season. Quinn is undefeated in dual meet competition and has placed very well at large invitational meets against some of the top prep competition on the east coast. The girls’ are having a good season led by a strong nucleus of returning runners Kathryn Walsh ’12 (Phoenixville, Pa.), Andie Hagemeier ’12 (New York, N.Y.), Kelsey Conrad ’12 (Lancaster, Pa.), Bronwyn Dewey ’13 (Chester Springs, Pa.), and Kim Breeding ’13 (Collegeville, Pa.). Third formers Monica Redfern (Ringwood, Ill.), Mary Kate McArdle (Reading, Pa.), and Kaila Jeter (Pottstown, Pa.) have had strong debut seasons.

The field hockey team, led by Kate Ferrara '12 (Spring City, Pa.), who recently made the U-19 Indoor National Team, earned the six-seed in the 16-team tournament and will host 11-seed Academy of the New Church on Monday, October 31 at 3:45 p.m. After graduating 10 players from last year’s team, the 2011 team has endured some growing pains as several young players have been called upon to lead the team. The girls’ are coming off of a convincing 4-0 victory at Germantown Friends School, and the experience gained throughout the season by the young team becomes more evident each game.

Girls’ soccer also earned a high seed, drawing the fourth-seed in the 15-team tournament. The defending MAPL Champions will host Baldwin School on Tuesday, November 1 at 3:45 p.m. If the girls beat Baldwin, they also will host a second-round match, facing the winner of the Germantown Friends School/Perkiomen School match. The girls’ also are having a strong season, led by the high-scoring Deanna Mayza '13 (Pennsburg, Pa.) and all-around threat Mary Edwards '12 (Pottstown, Pa.). Their record currently stands at 11-2-1 (2-0 MAPL) and they have won eight consecutive matches.
