On November 2, 2011, The Hill School hosted a conference for the Small Mid-Atlantic Boarding Schools (SMABS) Technology Directors. After being welcomed by Headmaster David Dougherty, the group quickly immersed itself in a number of agenda items including disaster planning, supporting multiple platform networks, and blended learning.
In the late morning presentations were made by Yvonne LeBlanc, Ph.D., Hill instructor of French, and Elizabeth Dollhopf, Hill instructor of mathematics. Yvonne showed a number of technology tools that she uses in her French classes including Audacity and Windows Movie-Maker, both served through Hill's Blackboard portal. She spoke in great detail about these resources that help students translate languages, while not doing all the work for the students.
Elizabeth Dollhopf followed up with a presentation about the curricular changes that have resulted in Hill's Algebra 2 classes using Blackboard, wireless projectors, and Lenova tablets. The discussion focused around the pedagogical values that remain regardless of the technology being used. Lunch followed with Hill's ISD staff and many topics were discussed including updates about Hill's new VOIP system. After lunch the technology directors toured Hill's server room and Academic Center to see the use of the wireless projectors and laptops in classrooms.
