Campus was alive with excitement for Spirit Week leading up to Saturday’s athletics contests at Lawrenceville. Theme days for Spirit Week began on Wednesday, and included: "Twin Day,” when students were encouraged to find a friend and dress alike; “Form Color Day,” when third formers wore orange, fourth formers purple, fifth formers green, and sixth formers black; and "Dougherty Day,” in honor of Headmaster and Mrs. Dougherty.
Wednesday also signified the beginning of "spoon banging" and singing the "School Fight Song" before meals. After lunch on Wednesday, Jack Willis University Outfitters arrived on the Quad and allowed students the opportunity to purchase their clothing. On Thursday night, the community gathered in the dining hall for the annual Thanksgiving Dinner of turkey, mashed potatoes, corn, and stuffing.
Spirit week climaxed on Friday night with the Red Meat Dinner – the only Friday seated dinner of the year. Prior to dinner, Mr. and Mrs. Dougherty were given the “Sweep L’ville Brooms” that traditionally are passed around to the fall varsity captains during Lawrenceville week, and were named honorary captains for the following day. Following the Red Meat Dinner, students flocked to Gillison Court for the pep rally and then headed outside for a bonfire.
The entire school traveled to Lawrenceville on Saturday for the 124th annual Hill vs. Lawrenceville athletics contests. Highlights of the day’s contests included the boys’ soccer 2-0 victory and the girls’ soccer 1-1 draw – both results clinched MAPL championships for each team and capped an exciting week that saw each team play in the PAISAA Final on Thursday. The girls’ defeated Episcopal Academy 4-0 to win the PA Independent School State Championship, while the boys’ unfortunately fell to nationally ranked Haverford School 2-0.
