Boys' Lacrosse: Ned Ide |

My experience with lacrosse spans four decades. In 1975, I made the jump from baseball to lacrosse my freshman year at Daniel Hand High School in Madison, Conn. It was a new program for a new sport. Four years later, we pulled together for an undefeated season, losing only to Wilton in the State Championship by one goal. The sport absolutely consumed me. After a postgraduate year, I went on to Trinity College in Hartford, Conn. I graduated in 1984 after being named a four-year All-New England and Division III All-American midfielder. In 1984 I began work at Thayer Academy in the Boston area. In 1985 I founded Thayer's first lacrosse team. They now compete in the rigorous Independent School League, and I am proud to say they do quite well. After a brief stint with a club team, the Boston Bullets, I moved on to Suffield Academy where I taught English and took over the lacrosse program. We managed well in one of the nation's most competitive schoolboy lacrosse leagues, the New England Prep School Athletic Conference. I sent dozens of players off to Division I and III schools. More importantly, we developed a strong team concept and a sense of accomplishment. Prior to my arrival at The Hill School in 1999, I founded a public high school program in New Hampshire. Although we had made the state tournament after our third year by advancing to the quarterfinals, I was most proud of what we had become after five years: a fully funded, well-equipped, 100-athlete strong lacrosse program. That is how I approach lacrosse. I measure success by growth and by progress. I think it is important to be competitive and to win, yet it is equally important to participate and be a member of that special, entirely unique framework that is known as a team! I hope you'll take a serious look at our lacrosse program and at our fine school. Sincerely,
Coach Ned Ide nide@thehill.org |
