Two Hill students advance in Society of Actuaries Fellow program |
Congratulations to Hill School math students Nicole Kwon ’12 and Jack Liu ’13, who are well on their way to becoming Fellows in the Society of Actuaries, SOA. On Monday, March 26, Nicole, from Seoul, Korea, and Jack, from the People’s Republic of China, passed the first in a series of exams administered by the Society to qualify as a Fellow.
An actuary is someone who uses advanced mathematics to assess risk and to price financial products that depend on risk. In order to become a Fellow in the Society of Actuaries, a candidate must pass a series of exams. The first exam is based on multivariate calculus and probability, and the passing of the first exam is usually sufficient to obtain an entry-level job as an actuary.
Both students have been studying the theory of random variables and stochastic processes for much of the year in their Advanced Math Seminar class with Daniel Bettendorf, instructor of mathematics and actuary himself. Nicole will matriculate at Harvard University in the fall, while Jack will remain at The Hill for his sixth form year and take a course on graph theory. |
