Fourteen Hill students compete in Science Olympiad
A group of 14 Hill School students recently went to Millersville University to compete in the 2012 Science Olympiad for the second consecutive year. Students competed against scholars from 28 other high schools and Hill’s team ranked 12th, a marked improvement over the team’s 20th place finish last year against veteran teams. Hill’s strongest categories were anatomy and physiology, experimental design, and thermodynamics. Of the 14 students who competed, seven placed in the top three of their categories.

The students prepared for the Olympiad from October through March, working independently while fulfilling their many other Hill School requirements. Faculty members Fred and Morgana Schlick served as the team’s Olympiad coaches..The Olympiad requires participants to demonstrate their scientific abilities in a number of ways, including taking written tests, performing experiments, and designing and constructing machines.

Science Olympiad is a national non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of science education; increasing male, female and minority interest in science; creating a technologically literate workforce; and providing recognition for outstanding achievement by both students and teachers. Emphasis is placed on active, hands-on group participation. Through Science Olympiad, students, teachers, parents, and business leaders bond together and work toward a shared goal of fostering science interest and understanding.
