Hill economics students in New York City On Thursday, April 26, 2012, 35 Hill School economics students traveled to the Financial District of New York City for an informative and enjoyable day, learning from the “real world” of banking and investments. Students were accompanied by their teacher, Carl Knobloch Instructor of Economics Karl Miran; Dan McMains ’98, instructor of religious studies; and Tony Reid ’75, director of the Humphrey Family Writing Center.
Arriving near historic Trinity Episcopal Church mid-morning, the students split into two groups. Each group had the opportunity to spend time at the Money and Monetary Policy exhibit at the Federal Reserve Bank’s Museum. The other part of their time was spent at the Stock Exchange, where they had the opportunity to observe and speak with market specialists from Barclay’s and UBS
.
In the afternoon, the group traveled to BNP Paribas’ mid-town offices, where they met with Hill School alumni and parents who work in finance. They learned about facilitating leveraged buy-outs, municipal bond offerings, and electronic trading, among other topics. Alumni and parents who took the time to meet with Hill students included Bromley Dougherty ’91, Peter Griffin ‘ 07, Michael Harris ’84, A. J Pawliw ’02, Sam Sidhu ’01, Dan Whalen ’75 P ’06 ’08, Joe Healey P ’05 , and Martha Woodling-Young P ’13.
The students then enjoyed dinner and several hours of free time in the city before returning to The Hill. Among the various sights they took in during this time were the plaques on Broadway that commemorate historic ticker-tape parades and the red-carpet entry of NFL draft prospects into Radio City Music Hall.
