A familiar name appeared in the Sunday, May 20 edition of the
New York Times: Damien Newton '95! Damien, the founding editor of "
Los Angeles Streetsblog," which is a blog about non-automotive transportation in Los Angeles, was interviewed for the article "Los Angeles lives by car, but learns to embrace bikes."
The article highlights the shifting culture change in Los Angeles, which is well-known as one of America's most congested cities. Riding a bicycle in the city used to be considered borderline suicidal, but now essentially has become a mainstream act. More than 40 miles of bike lanes have been created in the city in recent months, and there frequently are group rides that draw significant attention.
"I can't keep up with all the group rides out there these days," Damien said. "This isn't a side thing anymore. It's definitely out of the shadows and out of the subculture."
