||Fourteen of the region’s top prep school wrestling programs will converge upon The Hill School’s Sweeney Gymnasium for the eighth-annual Bissell ’33 Invitational on Saturday, January 12. Headlining the list of participating teams are four-time event champion and 2018 Pennsylvania Independent School Runner-Up Malvern Prep; defending invitational champion Gilman School; and partial squads from Blair Academy and Wyoming Seminary, currently ranked first and second, respectively, in the national high school wrestling polls.
The tournament is open to the public and there is no admission fee. Visitors should park in The Hill School Center For The Arts parking lot, located at 760 Beech Street.
A complete list of participating teams is as follows: Bishop O’Connell High School (Arlington, VA); Blair Academy (Blairstown, NJ); Germantown Academy (Fort Washington, PA); Gilman School (Baltimore, MD); Greens Farms Academy (Westport, CT); Malvern Prep (Malvern, PA); Mariana Bracetti Academy (Philadelphia, PA); Mercersburg Academy (Mercersburg, PA); Northfield Mount Hermon (Gill, MA); Peddie School (Hightstown, NJ); Phelps School (Malvern, PA); Tabor Academy (Marion, MA); The Hill School; and Wyoming Seminary (Kingston, PA).
First held in 2011 as the “King of The Hill Tournament,” the event was renamed the Bissell ’33 Invitational in 2012 to honor legendary Hill School wrestling coach Frank Bissell, Hill Class of 1933, who led the program to 17 National Prep Championships between 1947 and 1973.
Preliminary rounds will begin at 9:30 AM. All wrestlers are guaranteed at least two bouts in the double elimination tournament. Championship rounds will begin in the afternoon shortly after the conclusion of the final preliminary bouts. Varsity competition will be held in Sweeney Gymnasium, while the Junior Varsity division will take place in the Bissell Wrestling Room.
