2009 Green Cup Challenge Conference

On Sunday, November 9, five Hill students, along with Ms. Leah Giffin, Hill's sustainability coordinator, traveled to Lawrenceville for the Green Cup Challenge Conference. Representatives from schools all over the Northeast came together to share ideas for this year’s Green Cup Challenge, as well as the sustainability efforts they have implemented at their respective schools. Students attended workshops on a range of topics, including how to calculate their schools' carbon footprint and teaching renewable energy in science classes. Students also participated in seminars on how to bridge sustainability efforts into their school’s surrounding community, and a seminar about the Green Schools Alliance.

Devon Reese '11, Max Zhang ’09, Jessica Seman ’09, Eddie Lee '11, and Sam Lagor ‘08 enjoyed meeting students from other schools to better understand how to make Hill’s campus more sustainable. Eddie Lee also volunteered to be the leader of the State of Pennsylvania for the Green Schools Alliance.

The Hill will be participating in the Green Cup Challenge for the third time this coming February. We are hoping to reduce our energy consumption and hold up to the pledge we made with the Green Schools Alliance Climate Steward Commitment. The Green Cup has been a great catalyst for initiating change at schools in large part because of the energy and enthusiasm from all the schools that participated in the conference.
