Community Day 2011

Fifth form students and faculty work at the Habitat for Humanity home

As a part of The Hill School’s 2011-12 theme of Community, faculty and students of all forms participated in various areas of community action and involvement for the designated “Community Day” on Saturday, September 17.

For Community Day at The Hill School I did something different than most students. Because I am a member of the varsity football team and we had a game scheduled for the same day, the team decided to volunteer at the Ricketts Center in Pottstown to help clean up the grounds. The Ricketts Center is a community center just a few blocks from Hill’s campus. We picked up trash outside on the basketball court and playground. After we made sure the outside was spotless, we went inside to clean up the weight room and indoor basketball court. I believe this day really helped the team bond and work together, while also giving back to the community.

During the community service day my group of six other students and two teachers went to the North Coventry Food Bank to help organize their food pantry. As we took a tour around the small room that was stocked completely full of food, the two women who work at the pantry became very emotional while they talked about their experiences. They spoke of how touching the meetings with the people they help and how the people they deliver the food to come up in tears and are very thankful. Their lives depend on this service as their children are fed by the food donated by others; they are able to live their lives without the worry of the simple necessities of life. Every human being deserves to have at least what they need in life. They deserve clothing shelter, food, and water, and it was great to be able to see fortunate people helping those in need.

The third form class went to “Yoga in the Park” on Community Day. Everyone in the Pottstown community was invited to attend, and it was a great way to interact with new people by relaxing and having a good time. We all lay out our towels and yoga mats and listened to the yoga teacher tell us what to do. The stretching and techniques she taught us are a great way to relax and release the stress from our minds. After about an hour of yoga we went to the picnic tables as a form to eat healthy snacks and get to know each other better. It was a lot of fun and something I will remember well as my first Community Day at The Hill. By experiencing Community Day and each class carrying out their own duty by themselves, it truly showed me how great of a place The Hill is. Giving back to your community is something everyone should do.

Community Day is something that I would definitely love to do again. About eight students, including myself, and three faculty members went to a work site for Habitat for Humanity. We started walking to the site at about eight in the morning, but it was only about a 10-minute walk from campus. From there we split into three different groups to work on separate projects. My group worked on the front sidewalk by pulling up all the bricks and then starting to dig deep enough to allow cement to be poured in the ground.
About half way through we had the opportunity to meet the woman for whom the house was being built. It was an extremely gratifying feeling to actually meet the person who was going to live in the home, and we all could tell that she was extremely thankful for our work. At the end, the Habitat volunteers took us on a tour of the entire house. It was really cool how they pretty much redid the entire house. We worked for about three and a half hours before returning to campus. It was definitely tiring work, but was well worth it.
