Dr. Kevin Geiss '85

  • Current assistant chief scientist of the Human Effectiveness Directorate and Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL).

  • Researches the needs in the areas of human factors, biomechanics, fatigue effects, toxic hazards, modeling and simulation, and cognitive processing.

  • Published numerous scientific journal articles and government technical reports

  • Given numerous scientific lectures across the U.S.A and internationally

  • Responsible for the collaboration, design, and set up of the first microbiological experiment to be sent to the International Space Station

Patrick O'Shaughnessy '76

  • Graduated from the University of Vermont with a B.S. in wildlife biology, 1980; an M.S. in environmental engineering, 1993; and Ph.D. in environmental engineering, 1996.

  • Assistant professor of occupational and environmental health; teaches environmental health, statistics for engineers, industrial hygiene, engineering I, and air pollution technology.

  • Currently working on research to determine whether gaseous contaminants produced by the many animal "confinement" buildings affects the health of nearby residents in Iowa.

    Awards and Honors:

  • 2003, best aerosol paper published in 2002 (co-author), Aerosol Technology Committee of the American Industrial Hygiene Association

  • 2002, Collegiate Teaching Award, University of Iowa

Dr. Allen Nicholson ’71, University Professor  

  • Earned his undergraduate degree in chemistry from Cornell University, a graduate degree in chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania, and completed post-doctoral work in genetics at Rockefeller University.

  • Chairman of the Department of Chemistry at Temple University

  • Researches ribonucleases and gene regulation, in addition to teaching

Dr. Giles Whalen ’72, Surgeon  

  • Professor of surgery and chief of surgical oncology and endocrine surgery at UMASS Memorial Health Care in Worcester, Mass.

  • Instructs students, residents, and colleagues how to surgically treat people with cancer, primarily abdominal cancer.

  • Responsible for overseeing six physicians, one nurse practitioner, several nurses, and a clerical staff

John C. Oliver ’58  

  • Earned a B.A. in economics from Kenyon College; M.A. in government and political science from American University.

  • Served as president and CEO of the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, a private non-profit organization for 17 years.

  • Secretary of Pennsylvania's Department of Conversation and Natural Resources (DCNR).

  • DCNR has achieved great success with Project Stewardship, helping to improve state and forest infrastructure; Community Conservation Partnership, helping communities implement projects improving the quality of parks, trails, open space, recreational resources, and heritage conservation; and the Parks Reservation System.

Edward 'Ned' R. Houston ’65  

  • Earned a B.A. in visual and environmental studies from Harvard University; M.A. in social ecology from Goddard College; and a second M.A. in experiential education at Mankato State University in Minnesota.

  • Dean of Sterling College, Craftsbury Common, Vt.

  • Helped build Sterling from a one-year, post-secondary program to its current status as a fully accredited four-year college enrolling approximately 100 students seeking to pursue careers in wildlife management, policy planning, forestry, and agricultural sciences.

  • Teaches social ecology and world literature at Sterling College.

  • Ned's "second" career is helping his wife, Susan, with their llama breeding farm. The Houstons sell the llamas as pack animals used in "llama treks."

Edward 'Ted' S. Gresh ’84  

  • Studying for his master's degree in community and regional planning at the University of Oregon.

  • Completing his master's project with the Portland, Oregon Regional Metro Government; examining the metro area development ordinances in terms of their compliance with federal regulations developed as a result of listing salmon and steelhead as threatened under the Endangered Species Act

  • Member of Ecotrust, a non-profit conservation organization in Portland, Ore.

Mark A.E. Burget ’79  

  • B.A. from Dartmouth College, J.D. and M.B.A. from the University of Virginia.

  • State director for The Nature Conservancy of Colorado, an international non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of the diversity of life on Earth. As state director, he oversees a staff of 50 who negotiate the purchase of vital new nature preserves and manage already owned properties.

  • Works to raise private and public funds for the Conservancy's $72 million campaign, Heart of the West.

  • Was recently appointed interim director of The Nature Conservancy's Global Priorities Group. In this capacity he helps to develop and pursue The Nature Conservancy's strategic priorities across the globe. For more information on this organization click here.

Peter B. Stifel, Ph.D. ‘54  

  • B.A. in geology from Cornell University in 1958. Graduated from the University of Utah with a Ph.D. in geology in 1964.

  • Taught terrain intelligence at the U.S. Army Engineering School at Fort Belvoir, Va. from 1964 to 1966.

  • Joined the faculty at the University of Maryland in 1966, where he remained until his retirement in 1996.

  • Former president of the Geological Society of Washington and the Paleontological Society of Washington.

  • In his retirement, Peter raises cattle, sheep, goats, and other animals on his 300-acre farm overlooking the Chesapeake Bay in Easton, Md.
