| Inaugural Hill-Charterhouse Challenge 2004 |
The relationship between The Hill School and Charterhouse School in Godalming, England was evermore strengthened with the inception of
The Hill-Charterhouse Challenge in 2003. Ryck Walbridge, Hill assistant head for academics and instructor of science, and Stephen Hearn, Charterhouse chair of the science department, agreed this would be a great way for the students and teachers of both schools to learn more about each other.
Student delegates from each school spend the first part of the school year engaged in completing an extensive, creative project decided upon at the end of the previous school year, and then competitions are held at both campuses during the spring. Challenges vary from year to year, but projects have included medieval catapults, electric generators, and remote-controlled sailboats. In March, Hill delegates and faculty advisers travel to Charterhouse for the first round of the competition. In addition to visiting Charterhouse, the Hill group visits sites in England including the Tower of London, the London Eye, Buckingham Palace, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, the British Museum, the Imperial War Museum, and otehr landmarks. In April, the group from Charterhouse visits The Hill for the second and final round of competition.
