Opportunities to study abroad

The Hill School offers a number of programs allowing study abroad for various lengths of time, as well as programs that encourage foreign students to study here. Both scenarios enrich the Hill's diverse educational environment. These exciting opportunities include:

School Year Abroad
The Hill School is one of 26 independent schools in the United States to participate in the School Year Abroad (SYA) Program. Each year the SYA program allows 60 American students to live with European or Chinese families for a full year. SYA Schools are located in China, France, Italy, Japan, Spain, and Vietnam.

While abroad, students earn U.S. graduation credits and receive extensive preparation for the challenges of college life. Students are required to have two years of study, if applying to France or Spain, in the country's native language. SYA accepts beginners both in the study of Mandarin, for the program in China, and Latin, for the Classics focused program in Italy. Access the School Year Abroad organization's website.

Half year at The Island School
Students have the opportunity to participate in a half-year exchange program with The Island School, located in Cape Eluthera, Bahamas. These students had the opportunity to explore the island and interact with the Bahamian people by volunteering at a local middle school, as well as attending classes in English, history, science and math.

Milton Mountain School
The Mountain School is a semester-long program that offers 45 students from schools across the U.S. the opportunity to study academics while working on a beautiful farm in Vermont. Students join the faculty in a challenging program that focuses on issues faced by the community and affecting the environment.

Maine Coast Academy
The Maine Coast Academy is sponsored by The Chewonki Foundation, a non-profit education program with emphasis on the natural sciences. Students spend an academic semester during their fifth form (junior) year in Wiscasset, Maine. During the semester students in this small community study academic subjects and participate in a variety of afternoon work programs.

The Charterhouse Exchange
The Charterhouse School in Godalming, England offers faculty teaching exchanges and short-term student exchanges with The Hill School. Each spring, The Hill hosts Charterhouse students on campus, and Hill groups often visit England during spring break for a series of friendly "challenges" between the two schools. The Charterhouse School and Hill School continue to expand their relationship via distance learning and other endeavors.

Maru a Pula, Botswana
Every year a student from the Maru a Pula School in Botswana comes to The Hill School to complete his or her sixth form year of education.
