Student Philanthropy Council awards grant money for 2010

On Wednesday, April 28, representatives of The Hill School’s Student Philanthropy Council (SPC) presented checks to the four area organizations selected to receive a total of $10,000 in funds donated to the School by Charles A. Frank, III, Hill School Class of ’59, and his wife, Betty, for local philanthropic purposes.

The Gallery School of Pottstown: 'Healing Arts – Time for Me': $2,100 grant

The Gallery School of Pottstown's "Healing Arts-Time for Me" is a free arts program available to cancer patients, survivors, their family members, and caregivers. The Pottstown Memorial Medical Center works with The Gallery School to recommend students for the program; students are then able to choose from any one of many available classes at the Gallery School.  The goal of the program is to try and re-empower a segment of the community through the visual arts by encouraging a refocus on life, its challenges, and its gifts. The SPC grant covers 10 students for 12-week sessions of instructional, educational, and therapeutic art.

Carousel at Pottstown: $2,450 grant

The grant money given to the Carousel at Pottstown will help repair of the roof of the buidling that houses the carousel. The goal of the Carousel is to serve as a catalyst for Pottstown’s downtown revitalization. Once completed, it is projected to attract more than 225,000 riders and visitors each year, while improving property values, stimulating employment, dissipating crime, enhancing quality of life, and encouraging home ownership. The Carousel is on schedule to be finished in the next year, with the final steps being repairs to the roof of the structure. The SPC grant is part of a large project to fund the building of the Carousel which has the potential to change the entire face of Pottstown and the dynamics of the community. The ram figure featured in the photo will bear a plate with The Hill School name and logo.

Pottstown YMCA: $3,000 grant

The grant provided to the Pottstown YMCA will be used to purchase equipment for the center's new multi-media space, which will provide healthy recreational activities for local youths and teens. The goals of the project are to provide a dedicated area for youths and teens with interactive video recreation equipment, to offer options to fend off childhood obesity, and to encourage participation in healthy recreational and social activities offered at the YMCA. The Pottstown Branch has served the community for many years and is looking to target teens who may not have the desire or opportunity to participate in interscholastic athletics. The multi-media space at the YMCA will offer a healthy way for these kids to socialize. In addition, this space will serve those individuals in the community with special needs and senior citizens.

Pottstown Area Police Athletic League: $2,450 grant

The grant given to the Pottstown Area Police Athletic League (PAL) will provide for fencing and a backstop for a baseball field at the Upper Pottsgrove facility. PAL seeks to provide the youth and families of the community with diverse programming to create good citizens and enhance respect for the community.  The football and soccer fields are fully completed, and were used and enjoyed in the fall. The baseball field also has been completed; however, the SPC grant will help finish the installation of fencing and backstop. PAL anticipates a large increase in participation as parents and youth get excited about having a community space to call their own. The facility encourages area residents to participate in athletics, as well as provides families with a safe outdoor space.
