On Thursday, June 17, 2010, more than 50 alumni, parents, faculty families, trustees, faculty emeriti, and friends gathered for a special Hill event at The Wyeth Center of the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, Maine. The reception celebrated the exhibit featuring Hill's collection of original N.C. Wyeth paintings at the Farnsworth.
The Wyeth Center is a most fitting place for the paintings' sojourn, where they will be on exhibit through September 29, 2010. The original paintings were purchased by former Hill physical education director Michael F. Sweeney, who donated the works to The Hill School. The Hill is pleased to be sharing its treasured collection of original N.C. Wyeth paintings used in "Poems of American Patriotism," published by Charles Scribner's Sons in 1922.
The event kicked-off with Headmaster David Dougherty offering a lecture titled "Michael F. Sweeney and the Wyeth paintings at The Hill School" in which he shared the history of how the Wyeth paintings were a given to The Hill. Chief Curator Michael K. Komanecky then led the group on a special gallery tour and talk. The event concluded with a reception in the Farnsworth Art Museum Library.
