Code of ethics and conduct for coaches, players, officials, and spectators

The Hill School participates in interscholastic competition with peer schools that exhibit similar academic, athletic, and ethical standards. The following code of ethics and conduct, as implemented by the New England Prep School Athletic Council, defines the spirit in which interscholastic and instructional athletics will be conducted by The Hill School. This code of ethics and conduct provides guidelines for coaches, players, officials, and spectators to follow.

Proper Conduct and Good Sportsmanship
The purpose of this code is to set fair and honorable standards for coaches, players, officials, and spectators. Among these are the following:

  • Treating other persons as you know they should be treated
  • Regarding the rules of your game as binding agreements, the spirit or letter of which you should not evade or break
  • Treating officials and opponents with respect
  • Accepting absolutely and without quarrel the final decision of any official
  • Honoring visiting teams and spectators as your own guests and behaving as honored guests when visiting another school
  • Being humble in victory and gracious in defeat
  • Being as cooperative as you are competitive
  • Recognizing that actions on and off the field reflect on the athlete and the School
