Co-captains named for 2011-12 season
Josh Heyliger '12 (tri-captain for 2010-11 season) and Hans Brase '12  have been selected by their teammates to serve as the co-captains for the 2011-12 season. Congratulations!

Two 2010-11 players named First-Team All-MAPL
Fresh off their 2011 MAPL Championship, Hill School fifth formers (juniors) Hand Brase and Josh Heyliger were both named unanimous First Team All-MAPL. Only Blair’s Lionel Gomis (Siena) and Mercersburg’s Chall Montgomery (Navy) were also unanimous selections. Brase and Heyliger also were the only two non-seniors selected to the first team.

Brase led Hill in scoring, rebounding, and charges taken. The latter stat earned him the team’s Charge Award. His rebound total was the fourth best ever single season rebounding tally in Hill history, and down the stretch Brase became an automatic double-double. Brase averaged 14.1 ppg while shooting 54.2% from the field, including 33.3% from three. He averaged nine rebounds/game. He hit for a game-high 24 points in a first round state tournament win over an athletic Phelps team. Brase is a very high academic achiever, earning a 3.666 GPA for the fall term. He has scored a 1250 on the M/CR sections of the SAT.

Heyliger had an incredible finish to the year, getting stronger and stronger as the year progressed. After the holiday break, Heyliger had only two games not in double figures (one due to playing only one quarter in a blowout win), and scored more than 20 points three times. He shot 45% from the field, including 39% from three, and 83% from the FT line. He averaged 16 ppg, 4 rpg, 3 apg, and 2 spg. In his third year at Hill, Heyliger now ranks top five all time in assists, steals, free throws, and blocks and is up to sixth on the all-time scoring list. He has improved each year academically, and earned a 3.0 GPA for this fall term. He is awaiting his January SAT scores.

Heyliger was the winner of the Coach’s Award for Improvement, an unusual recognition for a team’s best player. The honor was well-deserved though as Heyliger’s decision making, assist to turnover ratio, defense, rebounding, and shooting percentage and range, were way ahead of his previous two seasons and even improved from December to February of this season. The team’s unquestioned leader, Heyliger was an outstanding team captain and will be again next year.

Both players were durable, playing in all 25 of Hill’s games. Hill finished the year winning seven of its last nine games. Both Brase and Heyliger look to have promising college careers ahead of them as well.

Trey Harry ’11 and Alex Hoey ’11 join captain Joshua Heyliger ’12 as tri-captains for the 2010-2011 season.  Alex also is The Hill School student body president.

Captains announced for the 2009-10 season
Hill basketball is proud to announce the team captains for the 2009-2010 slate: Carlo Bettini '10 and Andrew Donald '10. Both players were part of Hill’s first MAPL basketball championship in 2008 as fourth formers. This fall, Andrew (a two-way all-league selection) helped lead The Hill's football team to its first MAPL football crown, while Carlo led Hill’s soccer team in scoring.

Carlo hails from Milan, Italy and came to Hill as a fourth former. In his three years on the varsity team, Carlo has brought great defense and energy; he also serves on Hill’s "Dream Team," the Student Activities council that organizes weekend activities. Andrew is a four-year student from nearby Kimberton, Pa. A mainstay on Hill’s Honor Roll, Andrew also is a three-year varsity member and has been a solid contributor throughout, most notably as a three-point threat.

Hill basketball player receives sportsmanship award
Joshua Heyliger ’12 (Newark, Del.) won the sportsmanship award at the seventh annual Eddie Griffin memorial basketball game in Conshohocken, Pa on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009. Selected to play for a team of Philadelphia Area all-stars, Josh competed against similar standouts in the sophomore class from New Jersey, helping lead the Philly team to a 84-71 non-season victory.

Josh played an outstanding game, scoring 15 points, grabbing four rebounds, and four assists. Those totals combined with his normal outstanding defense and hustle earned him the all-star game honor. Josh, who started every game as a guard during his third form year, is poised to have an excellent sophomore season for the Blues’ 2009-10 season.
