I have been coaching baseball for 27 years and I have been head cocah of the baseball team since 1979. My assistant coaches are Chris Drowne (infield), Corbin Stoltzfus (pitching), and Jim Kirkpatrick (outfield). I earned a B.A. from Canisius College and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Duke University in classics with a major in Greek literature. My specialties include Greek and Roman epic and lyric poetry and the Roman republic in the age of Cicero. Serving as chair of the classics department for 10 years, I have authored three books: a study of the epinician odes of the Greek poet Bacchylides, a Greek primer, and a text with commentary on selected sources from the Roman republic. Other interests include the American Civil War, classical music, jazz, playing drums and harmonica, and reading in general. Since arriving at The Hill in the fall of 1976, I have served as a resident dorm parent and dorm head, and now continue a relationship with Hill residential life as a dorm affiliate. I coached football for 20 years, ice hockey for two, and continue to coach strength and conditioning as well as baseball, which has been my primary sport since 1977. Since 1996, I have served as internal co-coordinator for the accreditation process at The Hill. Related experiences include a current position as adjunct assistant professor of classics at Villanova University and as a consultant for ETS in the Latin Advanced Placement Examination as well as a former position on the Advisory Board of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
