Additional Hill School traditions
The legacy tradition
The Hill’s legacy tradition is one that clearly dates to the creation of the School in 1851; generations of “Hill boys” raised their sons to become “Hill boys” too. Students - both boys and girls - come here today to carry on the family tradition of great grandfathers, grandfathers, fathers, uncles, brothers, and, more recently, sisters who have attended The Hill before them. They too likely will encourage their children to continue this treasured family boarding school tradition.

Family
Strong emphasis is placed on our family environment and sense of community and friendship. The Hill is a close-knit family-oriented environment; it is a place that encourages a thirst for knowledge, and requires its members, both faculty and students, to look out for one another.

Headmaster's Holidays
Usually once each term, the Headmaster gives the students a surprise “holiday” and calls off classes for the following day. Students are notified of the holiday during lunch the day before it occurs, when great cheers erupt upon the announcements. Students use the day off to catch up on sleep or homework, hang out with friends, or go on one of the special trips planned by the Student Activities Office.

The Hill tradition of civility and hospitality
Politeness, openness, and respect are important traditions passed down through the students. Hill students often are complimented by visitors for their considerate attitudes and courteous actions. Students at The Hill respect School traditions, as well as faculty and each other. Hill students are encouraged to hold doors open for one another, as well as for all members of the Hill community and campus guests; they are expected to use excellent manners; they understand that their conduct at events such as concerts and athletic events reflects upon themselves and their School. Students respect the campus by walking on walkways and paths instead of cutting across the grass; this demonstrates the tradition of following in the paths of previous generations of Hill students, and it helps keep our campus beautiful!
