Dress code
Here at The Hill School, we believe Hillness is comprised of three ingredients: hard work, discipline, and tradition. Our traditional dress code is a symbol of self-discipline. As noted by Headmaster David R. Dougherty, “A necktie pulled up or a jacket worn to class, a skirt only four-to-five inches above mid- knee or hats not worn in buildings are all artificial barriers or limits that remind you that you are not doing whatever pleases you or is most convenient; instead you are imposing a discipline on yourself which demonstrates the seriousness of your work and the importance of self-discipline in it. That dress code is a symbol of your self-discipline.”

For academic dress, boys are required to wear the following items:
  • Blazer
    - A student may wear a Hill varsity letter sweater instead of a blazer.
  • Dress shirt and tie. Shirt must be tucked in.
    - A turtleneck may be substituted for a shirt and tie in the winter term.
  • Traditional khaki pants or dress pants with a belt
  • Leather dress shoes with a back
    - UGG boots may be worn during the winter term.

For academic dress, girls are required to wear an appropriate combination of the following items:

  • Blazer
    - A student may wear a Hill varsity letter sweater instead of a blazer.
  • Collared blouse (a double placket-front shirt joined with buttons)
    - Shirttails that extend below the blazer must be tucked in.
    - Traditional Oxford shirts are recommended
    - A turtleneck may be substituted for a blouse in the winter term.
  • Traditional khaki pants, dress pants, or skirt
    - Skirts may not exceed four inches above the knee.
  • Leather dress shoes with a back
