Welcome to On The Mat!

Hello to friends and families of Hill wrestling. I have started this newsletter to keep our alumni and friends informed about what’s happening in our program. I hope to put together a letter each month in season, as well as a spring, summer, and fall letter. These e-newsletters will provide updates on matches, tournaments, collegiate wrestlers, upcoming events, and "all other things wrestling." We have created an e-mail distribution list, and placed this letter on the School’s website. If you know anyone that we are not reaching and should, please e-mail me, Coach Jesse Young, at jyoung@thehill.org to add or remove names.

Coach's thoughts on the season
The Hill School 2007-2008 Wrestling Team

Our wrestlers began their competition this year at the West Chester East Tournament. Captain Dwayne Sampson ’08 had the strongest showing at this tournament, placing second in the 125 lbs. weight class. Dwayne pinned his first opponent, catching him with a headlock in the first period. He then majored his second opponent by a score of 9-0, but was outmatched in the finals 9-5. Co-captain Steele Phillips ’09 and Jay Knighton '10 placed third at 130 lbs. and 285 lbs. respectively. It was a good start to the season, and the team continued to improve the following weekend when we traveled to Northfield Mount Hermon in Massachusetts.

At N.M.H., the five lightest wrestlers on the team all placed in the top four. Harold Kim ’09 (103), Tyler Mueller '10 (119), Dwayne Sampson '08, Steele Phillips '09, and Karl Wiszumerski ’11 (135) wrestled impressively against 11 New England Prep Schools. Dwayne again had the strongest performance with a second place finish. Harold, Tyler, and Steele all competed through four rounds of wrestle-backs to finish third. Karl “Wiz” Wiszumerski '11 won three straight wrestle-back matches to get into the consolation finals, but ran out of gas finishing in fourth place. Also performing well with two wins and two losses were Daniel Adjangba '08 (189) and David Phillips '08 (152).

Hill returned home to wrestle in a tri-meet prior to winter break. The Blues won both matches, defeating local prep school Westmont 50-30, and St. Andrew’s of Delaware 74-6. St. Andrew’s was a bit depleted due to injuries, but the Blues won every contested bout. St. Andrew’s six points were the result of a forfeit at 112 lbs.

College-bound athletes

Dwayne Sampson '08 returned home from the N.M.H. to great news! He was accepted at Trinity University for the 2008-09 school year. Dwayne has been recruited to wrestle for Trinity and is planning on majoring in Chinese and Japanese. He has spent the past few summers living in rural Chinese towns in order to improve his speaking skills. We know he will have great success at Trinity.

Preseason training

The team has been preparing for this season since the end of the last one. Eight members of this year’s team chose to compete on Hill’s freestyle team last spring. The freestyle program was designed to help our wrestlers gain confidence and experience. This program was supplemented by a three-day-a-week lifting program. Steele Phillips '09 and Tyler Mueller '10 took full advantage of the techniques they learned and entered several open freestyle tournaments. As a result of this increased competition, these two look far stronger on the mat this season.

This past summer, The Hill wrestling program went to camp at nearby Bucknell University. While the proximity of the camp was an incentive to attend, the team also wished to show loyalty to Hill alumnus David Hoffman ’00. After completing an All-American career at Virginia Tech, Dave accepted an assistant coaching position for the Bucknell Bison.

This fall, wrestlers regularly attended open mat sessions as a chance to stay current with their technique. This also was an opportunity for students who are new to the sport to discover whether or not wrestling was the sport for them. Many of our athletes found time to attend these sessions while still competing in an interscholastic sport. This kind of effort and determination has resulted in an excellent start to the season.

Wrestling alumni news

Hill's first home match of the year happened to fall during college winter break, and there was a large contingent of wrestling alumni in attendance. It was great to see the tri-captains from the '06-'07 season; Jamer Bellis '07 is attending Cornell University, John McShane '07 has joined the club wrestling team at Lehigh University, and J.R. Hewitt '07 is wrestling for Elizabethtown College. Jamer joined the team for a spaghetti dinner at our house following the match. The boys were celebrating a successful start to the season and spending a little time together before leaving for the holiday break.

Timothy Feroe '83 also caught up with me after the match. His father, Melvin '56, was a Prep National Champion is 1951. I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting Hill alumni in my short time at the School. They have been so welcoming and provided me a better understanding of the incredible tradition that Hill wrestling has established. Please stay in touch and let me know if there is any way I can improve this newsletter. Please click here to view the remaining schedule. I hope to see friends and family at future matches, especially Lawrenceville on January 23.
