Symposia Days give students chance to learn “outside of the box”

The Hill School’s annual Symposia Day was held this year on Monday, January 24 and Tuesday, January 25, 2011. These days provide both students and teachers the opportunity to break routine and look at their subject matter in a new light. Each class period is extended from 40 minutes to an hour and a half, giving teachers a chance to present learning material in a fun and creative way, and giving the students a break from their typical schedule. Some of this year’s activities included the following:
  • Along with the Orchestra and Jazz Band classes, the Modern Musician I and II students worked with a Philadelphia-based recording engineer to create their own recordings which will be used throughout the rest of the year.
  • Working with artist-in-residence Elise Sheridan Arnold, Studio Art students created over-sized chess pieces based on the illustrations of Dr. Suess.
  •  Mrs. Ellen Nelson’s AP Art History class took a field trip to the Montgomery County Community College Gallery to see the “Intuitive Vision” exhibition and meet with artist Mike Hale.
  • The Hilltones and Hilltrebles worked with Mr. Stephen Longenecker during a workshop which included a rehearsal and an introduction to the basics of popular arranging in preparation for their upcoming recording.
  • After being introduced to Patti Scialo, a Reading photographer, students in Digital Arts, Photography, and History of Art and Music classes experimented with pinhole cameras and photograms.
  • Mr. Luke Block’s Design Tech students attended a lecture on Civil Engineering by a current parent working in that field.
  • Students in the Fine Woodworking class were given a demo on wood-turning followed by a lesson on turning their own bench mallets.
  • In Mrs. Donna Rudick’s Spanish 3 class, students practiced their speaking skills by dining in a classroom “restaurant.”
  • Students enrolled in Mrs. Julie Miran’s English 1 class enjoyed a game of A Midsummer Night’s Dream “Jeopardy.”
  • Mr. Ned Ide and Dr. Kathy Malone held their “Race in America” symposium with their students in the American Studies classes.
