As noted in earlier Hill website news, Tom Walter, Hill ’87, has been receiving a great deal of national attention for his selfless gift of a kidney to one of his baseball team members, Kevin Jordan, at Wake Forest University, where Tom is the head coach.
Today’s (February 10, 2011)
Philadelphia Inquirer features a story by Matt Breen which includes interviews with James Finn, Ph.D., Hill classics teacher and baseball coach – and Tom’s former coach. Jim will be retiring from The Hill this spring after 35 years of service to our school. The
Inquirer story also includes quotes from Tom Eccleston IV ’87, Hill’s assistant headmaster for admission and external affairs, a classmate and former teammate of Tom Walter, as well as former teammate W. Christopher Drowne ’89, the McNally Chair of History and an assistant baseball coach.
Tom Walter’s father, Ralph, wrote in an e-mail to Hill’s Communications Office today that “one of the best decisions we ever made as parents was sending Tom to The Hill School for a post-grad year.” The Hill certainly is proud of Tom’s inspirational decision to help his player, and his role as a coach and mentor to so many young people.
A story about Tom's heroic act of
kindness also was aired on the Wednesday, February 9 broadcast of NBC Nightly News. View the story here. The New York Times ran an extensive article in their February 9 edition. Read the article here.
