Summer in Singapore

This summer Tom Hutchinson organized a trip to Singapore to train with their Junior Olympic team for two weeks. Six members of Hill’s current wrestling team made the journey half way around the world to experience the culture of South East Asia, while training under the best wrestler in the world. Singapore’s coach is Sergei Beloglazov, a six-time World Champion and two-time Olympic Gold Medalist. Hutchinson has remained friends with Beloglazov since their coaching days at Lehigh University, and this provided a unique opportunity for the Blues wrestlers.

Jak Hutchinson ’11, Bob Dougherty ’11, Jack Sullivan ’11, Karl Wiszumerski ’11, Eugene Alvey ’13, and Adam Harris ’13 all made the international journey. The boys raved about the instruction, but had to brave the 90 degree heat and 90 percent humidity. At the end of their trip, the team took an excursion to Malaysia, where they were hosted by Hill alumna Katrina Lim ’09 and her family. The experience proved to be a once in a lifetime opportunity for all involved.

Coaches of legend

The Hill has been blessed this year to have a phenomenal group of coaches working with its wrestlers. Tom Hutchinson leads the Blues instruction, providing day-to-day skills and conditioning. He continues to teach the same technique that produced fifteen NCAA Champions. Through his connections, the team has been honored with the added instruction of both Thad Turner and Sergei Beloglazov this season.

Turner, Hutch’s former coach at Lehigh, is a winner of NCAA National Coach of the Year honors. Coach Turner typically spends one day a week helping Hill wrestlers with their defensive technique from bottom. Coach Turner specializes in switch and knee across moves; crucial to helping wrestlers defend against leg attacks and wrist offense.

Beloglazov spent a week in the Blues wrestling room while visiting Coach Hutchinson here in the U.S. Sergei provided great insight into what he referred to as a “2-on-1,” but Americans more regularly call a “Russian tie.” Sergei’s instruction added to Hill’s skills from their feet. The passionate former Olympian emphasized quick decision making and a constant attacking style; he left the Blues excited for their next bout.

1st Annual King of the Hill Tournament

The Hill began hosting an annual King of The Hill Tournament on the second weekend in January. The event featured ten schools this year from five states. The idea was to expose the team to strong competition from outside of the Philadelphia region. The team that travelled the farthest has a strong Hill connection. The Potomac School of Virginia is coached by Steven Bissell. Bissell is the son of coaching legend Frank Bissell ’33 and member of The Hill Wrestling Association.

The individual tournament went without a hitch thanks to numerous hours of volunteer time put in by parents, alumni, and friends of the program. Former team captain John McShane ’07 even came back from college to help run one of the scoring tables for the Blues. In the end St. Paul’s School from Baltimore, Maryland proved to be the toughest team in the tournament. However Hill had several strong showings. Colin Saunders ’12 was a tournament champion at 145 lbs. Both Chad Saunders ’14 (103 lbs.) and John Mauk ’11 (171 lbs.) were runner’s up. Jack Sullivan ’11 finished third at 140lbs., and James Stormer ’12 (119 lbs.), Karl Wiszumerski ’11 (152 lbs.), and Bob Dougherty ’11 (160 lbs.) all took fourth place.

The tournament featured a JV event as well. Colin Peters ’14 (103 lbs.) and Tommy Nelson ’13 (140 lbs.) both took first place in their respective weight classes, winning all of their bouts by pin. Next year the tournament will expand to 14 or 15 schools and add even greater competition.

Mixed dual results, solid individual records

Hill started its season with three easy and decisive victories over Perkiomen, West-Mont Christian, and George School. It seemed that the Blues may be headed for a solid dual meet season. Unfortunately injuries have slowed the team’s progress. This first dual event was the first and last time the team had their lineup intact. The result has been only two more dual meet victories over league rivals Lawrenceville and Peddie. The Blues finished with a dual meet record of 5-6. I am confident in saying that these losses do not accurately reflect how the Blues have been competing.

The Blues have managed several impressive individual results. Chad Saunders ’14 finished January with a 19-4 record. Chad who wrestled both 103 and 112 lbs. this season is undefeated against Pennsylvania Prep. opponents, and added an impressive victory over St. Benedict’s tough 103 pounder. Chad looks to be a top seed at the PAISWT tourney. Chad’s brother Colin ’12 has a similar record of 15-4, mostly at 145 lbs. Colin has also bumped up to 152 lbs.  on occasion to get the toughest matchups possible. Colin’s only losses this year have come to wrestlers that have placed at the top of National Preps, PIAA States, and Beast of the East. He’s had an excellent season and will look to continue this in February. PG John Mauk ’11 currently boasts a 13-3 record with his only losses coming to another PG, at state placer from NJ, a state placer from Delaware, and the National Prep runner up. John hopes to make his mark at the National Prep tournament later this month.

Other strong records include:

112 – Colin Peters ’14: 11-6

119 – James Stormer ’12: 13-10

125 – Rocco Perate ’13:  7 – 2

135 – Jack Sullivan ’11:  14 – 5

140 – Tommy Nelson ’13:  10 – 8

152 – Karl Wiszumerski ’11:  11 – 8

215 – Jakson Hutchinson ’11:  9 – 9
