Baseball: Bowen Borgeson

After spending five seasons as an assistant coach, Bowen Borgeson was named head baseball coach at the conclusion of the 2016 season.  Borgeson is a 2003 graduate of Groton School (Groton, Mass.) where he was a middle infielder on the school’s varsity baseball team. He then went on to attend St. Lawrence University, where he continued his baseball career. After graduating from St. Lawrence, Borgeson joined the front office of the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, the AA minor league affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. Borgeson’s day-to-day responsibilities with the Fisher Cats were in sales and merchandising, and he also worked camps and clinics that were sponsored by the organization. Borgeson arrived at The Hill in the fall of 2010 and was the JV baseball coach in 2011 before joining the varsity staff in 2012. During his five seasons as an assistant, Coach Borgeson primarily worked with The Hill’s infielders and he was the hitting coach.

Crew: Steve Ciraolo

Head crew coach Steve Ciraolo is an Athey Family Master, Classics Department, and a form dean of the Class of 2018; he coaches the winter erg power-endurance program. Steve holds an M.A. in classics from Villanova University and a B.A. in economics and government from Cornell University, class of 1990. Prior to his appointment at Hill, Steve served on the faculty of The Baldwin School and of Tabor Academy, where he coached rowing for fourteen years, seven as program director. He took Tabor crews to Henley Women’s Regatta and Henley Royal Regatta four times.

Boys' Golf: Joe Lagor

After ten seasons as the junior varsity coach, Joe Lagor inherited the boys' golf program from legendary coach Jim Reifsnyder at the conclusion of the 2010 season. Following his first year in 2011, he helped orchestrate the program's transition from a spring-only sport to a two-season sport that competes in both the fall and spring seasons.  In the fall of 2011, the team's first time playing fall competition, Coach Lagor guided the team to a second place finish in the inaugural Pennsylvania Independent School Athletic Association (PAISAA) State Championship tournament.  In addition to coaching boys' golf, Coach Lagor has coached a variety of levels of boys' ice hockey since his arrival at The Hill in 1987.  He also is the head of the Modern Language department and is an instructor of French.

Girls' Golf: Beth Allain

Girls’ varsity golf coach Beth Allain came to the Hill School with her husband in 2000 after the birth of their first child. Prior to The Hill, Coach Allain worked as a television sports anchor and reporter at the CBS affiliate in Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas where she covered a number of PGA tournaments along with Dallas’ other professional teams. A native of Richmond, Va., Allain has played golf since her early teens and competed on the boys’ golf team in high school. However, she did not play competitively at the collegiate level since the University of Virginia did not have a woman’s team at that time. Allain is an active member of the Women’s Golf Association of Philadelphia, competing in team matches for Hill’s home course, Brookside Country Club and other city events. She also has won six club championships at Brookside.  Coach Allain has coached the Hill Girls’ team since it was formed in 2006, and also is a member of The Hill's College Advising office.

Boys' Lacrosse: Mike Murphy

Having spent the past 22 years as a collegiate lacrosse coach, Mike joins The Hill as a college counselor and head boys’ lacrosse coach. For the last seven years, Mike was the head men’s lacrosse coach at Colgate University, and he previously was an assistant coach at West Point for eight years, Denison University for two years, and several other universities. A native of Beverly, Mass., Mike attended the University of New Hampshire, where he was a four-year member of the Wildcats’ men’s lacrosse team. Having been a college lacrosse coach since his graduation from U.N.H., Mike is looking forward to working with high school-aged students. Mike has been a NCAA certified recruiter since 2003 and will leverage his extensive NCAA experience to provide our student-athletes with invaluable guidance as they navigate the complex college athletic recruiting process. Mike and his wife, Jen, have two children, Colin and Dylan.

Girls' Lacrosse: Mo Gaitan

A lifelong Minnesota resident, Marcela “Mo” Gaitan arrived at The Hill as an Assistant Director of Athletics and head girls’ lacrosse coach in 2018. Coach Gaitan attended St. Cloud State University, where she founded the university’s club women’s lacrosse program. Her coaching experience dates back to her high school days, when she was a head coach in the Lakeville Lacrosse Youth Association, an organization in which she eventually became Director of Operations. From 2013 through 2015, Coach Gaitan was both a graduate assistant at Augsburg College and the head coach for Lakeville North High School, where she guided the team to an appearance in the state championship game during her first season. In 2015, Coach Gaitan became the first head coach at Concordia University in St. Paul, Minn., a position she held through the 2018 season. Since 2014, she also has been an assistant coach and the United States liaison with the Colombia Under-19 Women’s National Lacrosse Team.

Softball: Kristen Walter

After spending two seasons as an assistant coach, Kristen Walter was promoted to head coach of Hill Softball following the conclusion of the 2016 season. Coach Walter was a longtime travel softball player in Bucks County, and she was a four-year starter on the varsity team at Plumstead Christian School and served as a team captain during her senior season. Coach Walter went on to play at Gordon College, where she was a four-year starter on the Fighting Scots softball team. She began her collegiate career as a middle infielder before moving to the outfield for her final three seasons. She received the team’s Coach’s Award as a sophomore; earned honorable mention all-conference honors as a junior; and was a team captain during her senior season, when she set a program record for single-season at bats. Coach Walter gained her first coaching experience during her senior year at Gordon, when she helped coach the JV team at the school where she was a student-teacher. She was a graduate assistant with the Gordon softball team in 2012, and she coached at several levels prior to coming to The Hill in 2014.

Boys' Tennis: Clarence Oliver

Clarence Oliver took over as the Tennis Head (head varsity girls' and boys' coach) in the fall of 2014 after coming to The Hill following many years of working and coaching in the boarding school world in South Africa.  During his playing days, Coach Oliver was his high school team’s number one player and was chosen to represent his region at the Interprovincial tournaments. He went on to play at the University of the Western Cape, where he was a five-year member of the University’s tennis team. He continued to play into his early adulthood while working in South Africa, representing his region at several Senior Interprovincial tournaments. In addition to remaining active as a player, Oliver has coached tennis since 2000. Oliver was the Head of Tennis at Kingswood College from 2000-2006, coaching both the boys’ and girls’ teams. In 2006 he began teaching and coaching at Somerset College, where he was the junior boys’ coach through the 2013-14 season. Coach Oliver also is an instructor of mathematics at The Hill.

Boys' Track and Field: Bill Yinger '95

Coach Yinger arrived at The Hill in 2001-02 and became the head track and field coach in 2002-03. At The Hill, Coach Yinger works specifically with the hurdlers and pole-vaulters on both the girls' and boys' teams. During larger hosted meets he acts as the Meet Director with the help of Coach John Dollhopf on the Finish Lynx System.  He also teaches chemistry and Environmental Science.

Before coming back to The Hill, Coach Yinger was a teacher of science and assistant coach of football and track at Trinity-Pawling School for two years. Coach Yinger attended The Hill from 1992-1995 during which he was a member of the varsity football and track and field teams. He captained the latter in his senior seasons, leaving the school with three individual and nine relay school records. He attended Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. where he was a four-year varsity letter winner, a captain his senior year, an All Patriot League Athlete in seven of his eight seasons, an eight time IC4A qualifier, an All East Pentathlete and Decathlete, and a school record holder in the Pentathlon and Decathlon.

Girls' Track and Field: Patrick Lake

Patrick Lake took over as the head girls' coach in 2011.  Coach Lake coaches the jumping and sprinting events for the boys' and girls' winter and spring track teams. At Boston University he was a four-year varsity-letter winner in track and field, competing in sprints, the long jump, and triple jump. During his college career he received the E. Ray Speare Award, given to "The Outstanding Male Student Athlete at B.U." and was also named a Division-1 Academic All-American. At Hill, Patrick teaches all levels of Greek and Latin. He earned his M.A. in classics at Fordham University in 2008, and in 2011 earned his Ph.D. in classics from Fordham.
