We are pleased to share that Ellen Nelson P’10’13, Senior Master of the Arts was honored with The Brody Family Fellowship yesterday. Ellen has spent most of her life on The Hill School’s campus. Her mother was one of the first full-time female faculty members and her father was a 2nd form Earth Science instructor as well as the head football coach. As Ellen puts it, her parents also did, “A bunch of other things” on campus as they raised her and her six siblings in Wendell Dormitory. Ellen and her husband, Hill Senior Master Mark Nelson, raised their two children (and Hill alumni) here as well. We asked Ellen to do the impossible task and single out one of her favorite Hill memories. “It was the feeling of elation knowing that girls had arrived on campus in terms of co-education,” she shared, "For all of my life I used to smell aftershave walking past Rolfe dormitory. I remember one day I walked past and I smelled perfume. I thought to myself, 'Ah, the girls have arrived.'” Ellen plans to use this fellowship to complete another summer of study pursuing her master’s degree, in addition to traveling for two weeks in Amsterdam, Brussels, Bruges, and The Hague to traverse in the steps of Vermeer, Rembrandt, and Van Gogh and deepen her knowledge of oil paintings and Gothic symbolism.
