Boys’ varsity golf at The Hill School has been played since the 1920s and a school champion has been crowned every year since 1933, when Jack Munger '32 went on to play in the very first Masters Golf Tournament. All Hill School students have playing privileges at Brookside Country Club, adjacent to our campus. The team has use of the practice range, short game area and practice putting green, and hosts all of its home matches there. Brookside is a challenging 18-hole track that plays to close to 6,800 yards; it is both lush and hilly and shares many of the characteristics of courses designed when it was, in 1916.
Beginning in the fall of 2011, the Boys’ varsity golf team will play a “split season” schedule in both the fall and spring seasons for a two-year “trial period”. In the fall, the varsity team will play 12 matches and host the PIASSA Championship for Pennsylvania independent schools. The junior varsity team will also move its season to the fall term. In the spring, only the varsity team will play a spring schedule of eight matches, which will allow us to sustain our relationships with our traditional Mid-Atlantic Prep League (MAPL) foes. Varsity golfers will be able to practice and play virtually every day in the fall and spring.
The eight-man varsity team also enjoys playing at many of the finest courses in the northeast at our away matches against our traditional Inter-Ac League rivals, including Pro Tour stop Waynesborough C.C, magnificent Huntington Valley C.C., and fabled Merion G.C. All matches are stroke play, and either nine or 18 holes in length.
To qualify to join the program, all candidates are strongly encouraged to establish a USGA handicap, and to play as much competitive golf locally as possible. Over the last 20 years, with some variation, varsity players generally have had less than a 10 handicap.
