Girls' Squash at The Hill

View schedule and recaps at bottom of page

The girls’ squash program at The Hill School aims to cultivate well-rounded student-athletes and teach life lessons that will extend beyond their time on the court. Our approach emphasizes the importance of the team as a whole, in a sport that too often places focus and pressure on the individual. Both the Varsity and Junior Varsity teams seek to balance skills development, fitness, and mental preparation with a healthy dose of fun and spirited competition. Our coaching staff hopes to instill a lifelong love of the game in our players and help our athletes to reach their goals, which range from playing at the collegiate level to simply learning the fundamentals of the sport.

Since the inaugural season of girls’ squash in the winter of 1999, the second year of coeducation at Hill, the sport has continued to increase in popularity on campus among female athletes. Many of our squash players begin at the Junior Varsity level as beginners and work their way onto the Varsity ladder. Some of our standout players have gone on to compete at the collegiate level at schools such as William Smith College, Wesleyan College, Trinity College, and Franklin and Marshall College.

Interscholastic competition begins for both the Varsity and Junior Varsity programs in late-November and runs through mid-February. Both teams play competitive schedules in the greater Philadelphia and Mid-Atlantic regions. The Hill is a member of the Mid-Atlantic Prep League (MAPL), which provides great competition against Blair Academy, Mercersburg Academy and Lawrenceville School throughout the season and in the year-end MAPL tournament. Our non-league matches include teams from the MASA league such as Shipley, Conestoga, and Friends Central, as well as other local schools such as St. Andrews and Lancaster Country Day. Varsity ladder players have the privilege of playing in the U.S. High School National tournament each February, which is always a highlight of the season.

Located just outside of the nation’s squash hotbed, Hill squash players are able to participate in local U.S. Squash tournaments to achieve national rankings. The Philadelphia and Mid-Atlantic regions are saturated with great squash competition, which allows our athletes to take their play to the next level in the offseason and on the weekends. In addition, we are able to provide weekend trips to collegiate matches, exposing our players to competitive local squash.

Our program is housed in the Day Squash Center, which features seven ASB courts, one of which is a glass stadium court with seating for 50 spectators. Courts are open year round to students and faculty, and are often used by our weekend activities programming for in-house tournaments.
