Wrestling History

The Hill School wrestling program has one of the best prep school traditions in the country. Under former Coach Frank Bissell ’33, Hill won 17 National Prep School Championships and more than 20 Hill wrestlers went on to captain their college teams; countless more wrestlers went on to find individual and team success. This success has been continued recently with Hill finishing in the top five at three of the last eight National Prep Tournaments. Additionally, Hill wrestlers have the opportunity to compete in freestyle wrestling during the spring season. Several wrestlers have found a great deal of success at freestyle tournaments. This has included a second place finish by Dave Hoffman ’01 and a fourth place finish by Zach Doll ’00 at the Junior National Championships in Fargo, North Dakota. This past year, Dave was hired as an assistant coach at Bucknell University.

Vision/Mission Statement

Hill wrestling has celebrated a tremendously successful history, in recent years has undergone some challenging times. The School is looking to rebuild and revitalize Hill wrestling. Hill has had six head coaches in the past 10 years. As a result, there has been little consistency in terms of recruiting, scheduling, and technique. The current coaching staff is passionate about returning the school to its status as one of the elite wrestling programs in the country. There are several factors working in our favor to achieve this success:

• Assistant Coach Tom Hutchinson is one of the premier wrestling technicians in the country.

• Hill is situated between the Lehigh Valley and Philadelphia. This is a source of high caliber wrestling talent from which the team can recruit.

• Hill’s wrestling coaches are attending open youth tournaments throughout the year, and are actively seeking out the best student athletes from across the country.

• The School’s campus master plan calls for the construction of a new state-of-the-art wrestling facility which will draw local talent, and encourage blue chip athletes to attend.

• The Great Valley Youth Wrestling program uses our facilities twice a week. It is an elite team of local youth wrestlers coached by Aaron Brown ‘01, an alumnus of Hill. If worked with appropriately, they will serve as a feeder system for our wrestling program.
