While tailored to the specific content of humanities courses, these programs do include faculty, parents, and students not directly a part of the humanities programs. Every spring break there is a 10- to14-day program to Italy which covers Rome, Orvieto, Florence, Pisa, Sorrento, Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Capri. Dr. Bender has been to Italy more than 100 times and has authored a text on Roman civilization and several articles on monuments of the Augustan period.
There also have been excursions to Greece inclusive of Athens, Mycenae, Olympia, and Delphi, and a five-day cruise through the Aegean Islands of Mykenos, Delos, Rhodes, Crete, and Santorini with a stop in Turkey to visit the site of Ephesus. In conjunction with the Fine Arts Department, Dr. Bender also has arranged trips to England. In the spring of 2004, Dr. Bender arranged a performance tour for the Chamber Choir, which performed in Florence, Sorrento, and Rome.
