Game Recap
V Girls Water Polo vs Governor Mifflin (Dog & Pony Show Tourney)
10/24/2009
Result: L 4-5 (OT)

The Hill (15-6) met up with Governor Mifflin for the third time this season on Saturday. In the previous two meetings, the Rams had played well, and had chances to win, but could not hold on, eventually losing by 3 goals in each game. In this game, The Hill once again played without team captain Jacky Braca '10. Nonetheless, the Rams came out confidently, scoring the first two goals, one by Shannon MacCabe '11 and one by Katie Gibbs '11. After a Mifflin goal halfway through the quarter, The Hill led 2-1 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, Mifflin tied the score at 2-2 early, but a second goal by Gibbs with just 0:17 left on the clock gave the Rams a 3-2 halftime lead. In the third quarter, The Hill was outscored 2-0 by Mifflin, and headed to the fourth quarter trailing 3-4. In the fourth quarter, Lyndsey Marcheskie '12 scored on the opening possession, just 15 seconds into the quarter, to tie the game at 4-4. Both teams scratched and clawed, but neither could break through for a score. The Hill drew a kickout with 1:00 left on the clock and called a timeout to set up a good look at the goal. The Rams moved the ball well, and got a quality shot from Marcheskie, but the Mifflin goalie made a great save. The teams went to overtime (two 3-minute periods), with The Hill defending shallow end first. The teams played scoreless for the first overtime, and it wasn't until 30 seconds into the second overtime that Mifflin broke through with a goal. The Rams generated multiple opportunities to tie the score, but could not score on the Mifflin goalie, who was outstanding all game. In the end, Hill fell 4-5, but played perhaps their best game of the season, nearly defeating one of the top teams in Pennsylvania. For the season, The Hill has scored on nearly 50% of their shot attempts. In this one, the Mifflin goalie stopped 15 of the Rams' 19 shots (most of which were high percentage shots), and was really the difference in the game. On the defensive end, The Hill was solid all game long, allowing only 12 shots total, many of which were low percentage.

Gibbs again led Hill scorers, this time scoring 2 goals and making 3 steals. MacCabe (1 assist) and Marcheskie had 1 goal apiece. Patty Boyer '11 also contributed 2 assists for the Rams. Ellen Dvorak '11 played very well in shallow goal, making 5 saves while only allowing 1 goal. In the deep end, Addy Colona '12 has 2 saves. As a team, The Hill forced Mifflin to go 0-4 on their man-up opportunities.

Despite the loss, this was a game that the Rams can be proud of, and one that has made them a better team. If the girls can continue to play at this level, then the sky is the limit for this squad over the remainder of the season. The team's 7 remaining games are all against private schools, against which the Blues have a record of 7-2 so far this season, with both losses being 1-goal heartbreakers.
