Dr. Henry Bender, instructor of humanities and classics

The two-year sequence of humanities courses exposes students to various literary genres such as poetry, drama, and short story beside representative examples of painting, architecture, music, and film which foster thinking on key themes. In these genres students deal with questions such as, what is truth, what is the meaning of greatness, what is justice, and what is the relationship between fate and free will. Students are taught to embrace manifold points of view on these questions, seeing in the process the struggle of humankind to find meaning and coherence in the circumstances of our shared existence. Such sequenced studies promote both the development of skills as well as the acquisition of knowledge. Throughout both years the process of forming good values is the core of the humanities experience. The acts of reading, listening, and seeing often lead to analysis, which demands expression in spoken and written form.
