Hill students master the National Latin Examinations
We are pleased to announce the results of the National Latin Examinations (NLE), taken by all Hill students studying Latin. In late February, 93 Hill School students were among the more than 148,000 students across the United States and several foreign countries who took these standardized tests, which are administered in one full academic period.

The NLE Committee honors students for their performance by issuing certificates of achievement which correspond to the various scoring levels (exact numbers vary according to each test). The highest award consists of a gold medal and a certificate of achievement entitled, Summa Cum Laude, granted only to those students who have achieved either perfect scores or who have offered no more than one or two incorrect answers. The second highest award consists of a silver medal with a Maxima Cum Laude certificate of achievement. Additional awards include Magna Cum Laude and Cum Laude certificates.

Of the 93 Hill School students who took the exams, 62 received awards. Of those 62 awards, 11 were summa and 22 maxima, meaning that 53% of the total awards to Hill students were in the two highest categories. Of the 34 students who took the Latin I exam, 17 (50%) received awards; 30 students completed the Latin II exam and 21 (70 percent) received awards; 29 students took the Latin III/IV exam with 23 (79 percent) receiving awards.

With some questions on Roman culture, architecture, and history, the tests cover Latin I, II, III/IVProse and III/IVPoetry, V and VI. Each test consists of 40 multiple-choice questions inclusive of a Latin passage on which questions explore the student’s ability to comprehend and translate.
