Track and Field

The Hill School's track and field teams are among the School's greatest programs in terms of both tradition and longevity. There is a strong tradition among The Hill School's teams of athletes going on to compete at a college level with no less than 25 boys and girls competing in collegiate track and field in just the last decade!

Since the turn of the last century, The Hill has documented the boys' school records. Such athletes as William Porter '44, the Gold Medal winner and Olympic Record holder in the high hurdles in 1948; Shawn Fernandes '96, the sprinter who rewrote the record books in the mid-1990's; and finally Curtis Alitz '74 and John Carson '94, the dominant distance runners of the mid-1970's and 1990's respectively stand out as prominent individuals just to name a few. There also is a history of great teams with undefeated seasons in almost every decade of the program's existence.

Our girls have already made a huge impact on the Schools' track as well. While the girls' records are fairly recent, many of them are among the most impressive we have as a team. Katherine Wallace '01, the Schools' high jump and triple jump record holder, has been a multi-time All American at Wheaton College. Nicole Burns '05 just recently finished her incredibly successful career at Brown University where she left behind an astonishing nine top-five all-time Brown performances including a school record in the indoor 200 meters of 24.33 FAT. We are very proud of all that our athletes have accomplished both at The Hill and beyond. View Hill's track and field records.

This year for the boys’ team promises to be a test of wills as a core of older athletes will be counted on to lead a larger group of young athletes. The team will depend on 6th former Quinn Davis and 4th former Braden Cordivari to lead the distance and middle distance squads. Newcomer Kwame Larbi '12 will be heavily depended on to lead the hurdle and jumping events along with surprise talent Jerome Alexander '12. Larbi will have to do relay duty as well when needed. The sprinting squad will rely heavily on 6th former Ben Wong and a host of young talent. The throws will be led by two returning athletes in 6th former Seth Reinhardt and 4th former Brandt Beck, and several new talents who have shown tremendous potential in the early season. Overall, the team should be able to post a competitive record and have a hugely successful season.

The girls’ team has seen a huge resurgence, of young talent to support a wily group of veterans. The distance squad will be led by 6th former Kathryn Walsh, 5th former Kim Breeding, and 3rd form phenom Monica Redfern. The sprint squad returns two four-year veterans in Amy Amuquandoh and Cat Andersen. The hurdles will be three deep but depend on 6th former Katharine Quain to lead. Field events will be a challenge for the girls’ team but we are hopeful for good results in the near future.

The coaching staff brings to the table a plethora of knowledge as can be seen in the coaches' profiles. It is worth saying at this point that the instruction given on an individual level, for each event, far exceeds my desires as a program director. This is a fact of which I am particularly proud, and one of which our athletes are particularly grateful.

The future of the program has never looked brighter as we head into a yet another year of excellence on the track for The Hill School track and field athletes. I hope that you will not hesitate to contact any of the coaches with questions about the program, possible admissions to The Hill School, or simply a desire to talk.  Please feel free to contact Coach Yinger at byinger@thehill.org or Coach Lake at plake@thehill.org.

Thank you for your time,
Bill Yinger '95
