2022 Field Hockey MAPL Champions

When Hill visited The Lawrenceville School this past weekend in New Jersey, both schools were celebrating 135 years of athletic competition. The varsity field hockey team was coming into the weekend with a 16-1-0 record and pressure to not only beat Lawrenceville, but also capture the 2022 Mid-Atlantic Prep League (MAPL) title.

On November 5, 2022, goalkeeper and captain Hala Silverstein ‘23 carried the team to a 3-0 shutout which in turn gave them the keys to the championship win! Once the buzzer signaled the end of the game, Hill students and fans rung their cowbells and stormed the field with their Hill flags.

Hill showed their dominance in the league with a 5-0 sweep across the board. This victory marked the fourth consecutive season Hill’s varsity field hockey team defeated their longtime rival, Lawrenceville. This win also marks the team’s 12th MAPL Championship title.

“I am incredibly proud of this team and all that we have accomplished this season,” remarked Head Coach Jen Weissbach. By playing against the best teams in the country throughout the entire season, we’ve learned how to compete at the highest level.”

With 11 graduating sixth formers on this year’s team, the Blues wanted to go out with a bang and bring home the cup once again. Now that they have achieved that, Weissbach and her team shift their focus towards winning the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletics Association (PAISAA) State title for the first time in School history.

“The 2022 squad has dedicated an unbelievable amount of energy, effort, and focus and I’m confident we will work together to achieve our goal,” stated Weissbach when asked about the PAISAA playoffs.

“We are excited for the competition ahead!”

Last season, Hill made it to the PAISAA championship game vs. Episcopal Academy, but unfortunately lost late in the last quarter. The team will go into their quarterfinal match vs. William Penn Charter on Tuesday, November 8, which will be played at home on the Briggs S. Cunningham Field ’26 ’50 Turf Field at 4:45 p.m.
