The Hill School is pleased to announce that Preston G. Athey, a member of The Hill School’s class of 1967 and current Board Chairman, will serve as the School's Commencement speaker on Saturday, May 29, 2021. Mr. Athey will retire as Board Chairman at the end of this fiscal year, a position he has held since 2014.
Mr. Athey first joined the Board in 2002 and served as vice chairman the two years prior to assuming the role of Chairman. In his current role, he is chairman of the Executive Committee as well as a member of the Board’s Governance, Finance-Investment, and Finance-Budget Committees.
Unequivocally, Mr. Athey is the most generous benefactor in Hill School history, and his generosity extends far beyond the financial realm. His exceptional leadership, fervor, and commitment to advancing the School earned him the prestigious distinction of being selected as the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE)’s Seymour Preston Award recipient, an award that recognizes valuable, influential leadership to an educational institution.
To be certain, The Hill has seen some of its largest growth and expansion under Mr. Athey’s guidance. In 2014, he and his wife, Nancy, made a transformational and record-setting $10.25 million gift to the School, with $10 million directed to the endowment to support our teaching faculty by creating a promotion model, the Aspire program, that attracts and retains exceptional master teachers. The couple’s passion for the arts inspired their gift of a Steinway grand piano to our Center For The Arts, and they have supported the restoration of our historic Alumni Chapel organ and financed repairs and renovations to the Chapel’s roof, windows, and robing rooms, among other initiatives including dormitory enhancements, the Dining Hall renovation, and creation of The Reverend Dr. John T. Harvard Scholarship.
Mr. Athey spent most of his highly successful professional career in finance and investments with global leader, T. Rowe Price, Inc. He joined the firm in 1978, served as vice president and portfolio manager in the U.S. Equity Division. From 1991-2014, Mr. Athey was the president and portfolio manager of the T. Rowe Price Small Cap Value Fund.
Mr. Athey holds a B.A. from Yale University and a M.B.A. from Stanford University. He and his wife, Nancy, reside in Owings Mills, Md. They have three grown children and eight grandchildren.
Commencement Exercises will begin with Baccalaureate at 9 a.m. in the Alumni Chapel followed by the School 170th Commencement ceremony on the Quad. Graduates are able to invite four guests to attend in-person; other outside guests are not permitted. A livestream of the ceremony will be available via The Hill’s website.
