Five Teams Voted Into the Trophy Room

Nestled in the ground floor of Sweeney Gymnasium is the room in which all Hill School varsity athletics teams aspire to have their team photo hung: the Trophy Room.  Inside the Trophy Room are photos, trophies, and other mementos commemorating the greatest teams and individuals in the School’s illustrious athletics history.

Each spring, The Hill Athletics Executive Committee votes on teams for trophy room induction.  This year, five teams were chosen based on their outstanding seasons.  Below are brief blurbs about each team’s accomplishments.

Field Hockey
Record: 14-4-1
Mid-Atlantic Prep League Champions

On September 19, an undefeated Academy of Notre Dame, the nation’s top-ranked team, departed Pottstown with the first blemish on its record following a 2-2 tie.  The result was one of several positive outcomes Hill registered against ranked opponents (national and regional) throughout the season, resulting in an invitation to compete in the 2019 MAX National Field Hockey Tournament.  Hill netted a program-record 90 goals and outscored MAPL opponents 28-4 en-route to winning the ninth league championship in program history.

Boys’ Water Polo
Record: 22-1
Eastern Prep Champions

For several years, the undefeated 1984 team was regarded as the greatest in Hill boys’ water polo history; the 2018 team will challenge that distinction.  Hill finished the season undefeated against prep competition, with its only loss coming to a Navy Aquatics club program.  Hill’s goal differential on the season was +155, as the team scored 319 goals and allowed just 164.  In the Eastern Prep Championship game, Hill overcame a four-goal deficit in the third quarter to defeat Haverford 12-11, claiming the program’s first “A” Division Easterns championship since 2002.

Boys’ Ice Hockey
Record: 18-9-1
Mid-Atlantic Hockey League Champions

This year’s boys’ ice hockey team posted its best record since 2005, registering landmark victories over traditional New England powers Choate, Cushing, and Tabor along the way.  The team started the season with 11 wins in its first 15 games before a slew of injuries caused a mini-skid in late-January.  As players returned to the lineup, the team returned to its winning ways, posting a 7-1-1 record over its final nine games.  A 4-2 win over rival Lawrenceville secured the team’s third MAHL Championship in the past four seasons.

Boys’ Indoor Track and Field
Pennsylvania Independent School Athletic Association Champions

The 2018-19 boys’ indoor track and field team built an impressive legacy: four new school records, a State Meet qualifier, producing both the track and the field “Athlete of the Meet” at the MAPL championship, and scoring more than double the points of the runner-up to win the inaugural PAISAA indoor championship.  Competing in mostly invitationals, in the team’s two dual meets, Hill bested Malvern Prep and Westtown School.  Hill finished second in the MAPL, just 13-points behind Lawrenceville.

Boys’ Outdoor Track and Field
Record: 6-0
Mid-Atlantic Prep League Champions
Pennsylvania Independent School Athletic Association Champions

For the first time since 1998, a Hill track and field team completed the season with a perfect record.  The team began the season with a first-place finish in the Hill Relays meet, followed by victories over Lawrenceville, Peddie, and the four opposing schools at the Blair Academy Quad Meet.  In a two-week span, Hill won a pair of Championship meets, first ending Lawrenceville’s 17-year title streak in the MAPL Championship and a week later claiming the Independent School state crown for the second time in the past four seasons.
