Athey Family Master of the Arts Diane Richards P'21 '23 held a Zoom meeting on Tuesday, April 21, 2020 with student teachers from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. With their student teaching program cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the University of the Arts pivoted and reached out to arts instructors who are teaching online to share their experiences with the student teachers.
Diane was able to talk about how she has set up an online learning class for her visual arts students at The Hill School. She discussed obstacles, successes, the platforms used, asynchronous and synchronous teaching/learning tools, and more. Some of the take-aways from the session are that teachers will continue to learn new ways to connect with their students, in this case providing instructions via online.
"For many, teaching online is a new experience that can be challenging, yet incredibly rewarding," remarked Diane. "Fostering a community - whether in person or via Zoom - requires patience, empathy, and a great sense of humor."
