The Hill School is pleased to announce the appointment of Josh Schofield as The Hill School’s Director of Racket Sports. Josh joins The Hill from Franklin & Marshall College after serving as their Director of Tennis and Head Men’s and Women’s Tennis Coach. He will lead the boys’ and girls’ squash and boys’ and girls’ tennis programs and will join Hill’s faculty as an instructor of history.
Josh replaces Head Boys’ and Girls’ Varsity Squash Coach Josh Cardwell who has served the program since 2021 and Head Boys’ and Girls’ Varsity Tennis Coach John Fath who has served the program since 2023.
“Having led and assisted in college tennis programs for more than 20 years, Coach Schofield knows what it takes to help our tennis and squash student-athletes take their games to the next level, and he will undoubtedly be a tremendous support for players who aspire to continue playing in college,” notes Wilbur C. Riley Director of Athletics and Co-Curricular Activities Seth Eilberg P'22 '23 '25 '28.
“I am so excited to be The Hill School’s Director of Racket Sports. I'd like to thank Seth Eilberg, Jason VonWachenfeldt, and the staff I met for being so welcoming and supportive, and for trusting me to lead these programs,” Josh says.
During his seven-year tenure as head coach at Franklin & Marshall College, Josh worked to continue excellence in recruitment, player development, and academic performance. Josh led both the men’s and women’s teams to the Centennial Conference Tournament during each of the seasons in which the conference tournament was held. He was named the Centennial Conference Coach of the Year following the 2021 season and saw dozens of athletes receive All-Centennial Conference accolades. In each of his seven seasons, the teams were honored as a part of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Teams.
From 2015-2017, Josh rebuilt La Salle University’s men’s and women’s tennis programs from the ground up by focusing on developing structure, positive relationships, and strong academic performance. Before La Salle, Josh became Swarthmore College’s head men’s tennis coach in 2011 where the team gained a national ranking for the first time in six years. The men’s team qualified for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Tournament across multiple years, reaching the quarterfinals in 2006. The team also had three singles and three doubles qualifiers for the NCAA Individual Tournament under Josh’s leadership.
At the University of Pennsylvania, Josh joined the tennis program as an assistant coach in 2006 when the team became Ivy League Co-Champions in 2007 and the winners of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament, earning a ticket to the National Indoor Championships.
“While he has primarily led tennis programs, Coach Schofield is an avid squash player. He understands how to build team chemistry in ladder sports like squash, and will be for a great resource for our players,” says Eilberg.
Josh graduated from Villanova University with a B.A. in history and Russian Area Studies. He also holds two masters’ degrees: a Master of Education degree from Temple University and a Master of Arts in history degree from Florida State University. Coach Schofield will continue to reside in Collegeville, Pa., with his wife, Liz, and two children, Charlotte and James.
“The Hill School has a strong tradition of success, and I look forward to building on that while developing each student-athlete to be prepared for life. My family and I are excited to embrace the Hill community. I can't wait to get started!” Josh states.
