The Hill School is pleased to announce that Katherine Bowie has been named as the School’s new head field hockey coach. A 2015 graduate of Division I Siena College, she most recently served as an assistant field hockey coach at the University of Pennsylvania. In addition to her coaching role, Bowie will join The Hill School faculty full time as the auxiliary programs coordinator.

Bowie replaces Interim Head Coach Gabby Gomez P’27, who led the team to a 2023 Mid-Atlantic Prep League (MAPL) title, marking their 13^th in program history. The team also was the 2023 Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association (PAISAA) runners-up under her leadership. Gomez will continue to serve as an assistant coach.

“Out of an incredibly impressive and deep candidate pool, Katherine stood out in many ways,” notes Hill School Director of Athletics and Co-Curricular Activities Seth Eilberg P'22 '23 '25. “She is enthusiastic about stewarding a premier independent school field hockey program while offering her student-athletes holistic support, both on and off the field.”

Bowie earned a B.A. in religious studies with a minor in educational studies, biology, and Latin from Siena College in 2015 where she was a member of the Saints field hockey team. Throughout her four years, she started in 53 out of 65 games, and was named to the Metro Atlantic Athletics Conference (MAAC) All-Academic Team (2013, 2014); the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) National Academic Squad (2013, 2014); and the Northeast Conference (NEC) Academic Honor Roll (2012).

She has extensive coaching experience at the collegiate, high school, and club levels. Before her coaching position at UPenn, she served as the associate athletics director and field hockey program director at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Austin, Tx., (2021-2023); the head field hockey coach at Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. (2020-2021); and assistant coach field hockey at Bates College in Lewiston, Me. (2017-2020).

“Having coached at all levels, she has a great sense of what our players need to be successful at the next level,” continues Eilberg. “Most importantly, she connected with our players. Katherine clearly understands and values the unique context of doing this work in a boarding school setting, and we are excited to welcome her and her family to Hill.”

Her additional experience includes serving as the director of Revolution Field Hockey; the coaching and curriculum director at Coastal Field Hockey; and a graduate assistant coach at Cedar Crest College. She also taught science and coached field hockey at St. Margaret’s School in Tappahannock, Va., for one year after college.

“I am beyond grateful to Seth Eilberg, Dean of Faculty Jason VonWachenfeldt, and the entire search committee for the opportunity to lead this program,” states Bowie. “When I stepped on to campus, it was clear that The Hill School strives to achieve excellence in every aspect of student life including athletics. I am excited to take on this role as head field hockey coach and continue to build on the amazing talent and traditions already ingrained in the program.”

Alongside Bowie and Gomez this year will be in Liz Tamburro who will join Hill as the team’s goalie coach. A Division I field hockey player at Ohio State, Liz brings more than 10 years of experience working with goalies. She currently is the goalkeeper for the USA Women’s Indoor National Team and she previously worked with the WC Eagles Field Hockey, the club team where many Hill School field hockey student-athletes compete. In addition to coaching, Liz will live on campus and serve as an Instructor of Spanish.
