In December of 1970, eight high school basketball teams gathered on The Hill School campus to participate in a newly formed holiday tournament, the Hill Invitational Tournament.
At 4:00 PM on Thursday, December 19, Episcopal Academy and Peddie School will tip off the 50th annual tournament, which has since been renamed the Mercer Invitational Tournament and is the fifth-oldest tournament of its type in Pennsylvania.
A reception to celebrate the tournament’s milestone anniversary will take place at 6 PM on Friday, December 20 in The Hill School’s Center for the Arts (registration link). The reception is not limited to former Hill basketball players; all members of The Hill Community, past and present, are welcome to attend as the School commemorates the tournament’s legacy and honor the lasting impact of tournament namesake David Mercer, Hill School Director of Athletics from 1960 until 1990. The tournament was renamed the Mercer Tournament in 1990 to honor Mercer’s retirement.
Hill enters the tournament as the three-time defending champion and aims to become just the third team to win the tournament in four-consecutive seasons (Penn Charter, 1983-1986; Episcopal Academy, 1987-1990).
This year’s participants also include Canterbury School (New Milford, Conn.), Episcopal Academy (Newtown Square, Pa.), Kiski School (Saltsburg, Pa.), St. James School (Hagerstown, Md.), Peddie School (Hightstown, NJ), Princeton Day School (Princeton, NJ), and Western Reserve Academy (Hudson, Ohio).
A full schedule is included below; at the end of each day, that day’s results and the next day’s schedule will be posted.
There is an admission fee for the Mercer Tournament of $5 per-day (good for all four games) or $10 for a weekend pass.
All tournament proceeds benefit the Dick Ricketts Scholarship Fund, which is awarded annually to a college-bound student athlete from Pottstown High School.
