Nine Students Claim Revell '43 Writing Contest honors

Nine Hill School students were honored during the annual Alex H. Revell, III '43 Writing Contest awards ceremony, which took place during an all-school meeting on Wednesday, May 22, 2019. The contest honors the late Alex Revell, a longtime instructor of English at The Hill.

The contest includes three categories: poetry, nonfiction, and fiction. The Gardner Prize for Nonfiction is named in memory of Bon Gardner '64, former Hill instructor of English; The Marshall Prize in Poetry is named in honor of Ann Marshall, instructor of English emerita; and The Wolff Prize in Fiction is named in honor of Tobias Wolff '64, acclaimed author of the book, Old School, among other short stories and books.

Marshall Prize for Poetry:

First place: "94" by Ella Heft '21
Second place: "Island Parable" by Tucker Dunn '19
Third place: "1-619-762-9204 Coronado, CA" by Portia Sockel '22

Gardner Prize for Nonfiction:

First place: "The Apology" by Melissa Xu '20
Second place: "Proud to be an American" by Roma Khan '20
Third place: "Lead for Lunch" by Robert Twomble '20

Wolff Prize for Fiction:

First place: "H is for Hydrogen" by Rachel Liu '20
Second place: "Another Soldier Falls" by Sabrina Messineo '20
Third place: "Untitled" by Quinton Tang '21
