Hearts of Humanity is a nonprofit organization based in Pottstown that promotes sustainability and community empowerment. As a community project, members of the organization built a pollinator garden in the Edgewood Cemetery, adjacent to The Hill School. A pollinator garden is a garden of different plants that attracts different pollinating birds and insects like hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees.
In mid-September, Shonda Levy of Hearts of Humanity reached out to Hobart’s Run, The Hill School’s neighborhood initiative, to see if the School could provide help researching plants in the pollinator garden. Cathy Skitko, Director of Communications for Hobart’s Run, posed the question to Hill faculty members; immediately, Gavin Harter, Instructor of Science, offered his Quadrivium Scholars to do all the research needed.
Harter and his class have visited the garden weekly to take notes and photos that they use for their research. During the fall term, they were able to build a catalog of the different plants included in the pollinator garden. Within the catalog, the Scholars document qualities like scientific names, origins, pollinating compounds, and the care of each individual plant. The students were proud to be able to learn about growth processes while giving back to the community in a small way.
