Today (May 1, 2026) marks the official kickoff of The Hill School’s yearlong 175th Anniversary celebration and the launch of the School’s Strategic Plan: The People, The Place, The Journey.
Founded on May 1, 1851 as The Family Boarding School by the Reverend Matthew Meigs, we celebrate our history and the values that continue to guide us according to, “Whatsoever things are true.”
During this weekend’s kickoff events, students and faculty will gather for a special formal seated lunch on Friday afternoon, marking the occasion, complete with a special “Thought of the Day” offered by Trustee Board Chair Jim Alexandre ’75, and, of course, birthday cake.
In the evening, Hill’s student musicians, vocalists, and dancers will take the stage to showcase their talents in the Annual Spring Performing Arts Festival! The Festival features a special grand finale (with a surprise special guest) and an original composition by Max Yang ’27 and Liam Mpofu ’26, “Legacy”, a tribute to the generations of alumni.
While we’re celebrating on campus, we encourage Hill alumni around the world to join the celebration by sending us birthday wishes and photos at photos@thehill.org, which we will collect throughout the weekend.
On Saturday, May 2, the on-campus celebration continues with Blue’s Birthday Bash, a party for students and employees featuring an all-school cookout, student bands, games, crafts, and food trucks.
In addition, the School released its 175th Anniversary Video that reflects upon Hill’s enduring qualities and looks ahead to the School’s future. Special thanks to Hill faculty members and alumni, Bill Yinger ’95 P’28 and Courtney Neese ’00 P’27 ’28, for lending their voices to the project.
Limited-edition 175th Anniversary merchandise will be available for purchase at the Campus Store throughout the next year.
A Legacy of Excellence
Originally founded on May 1, 1851 as The Family Boarding School for Boys and Young Men by The Reverend Matthew Meigs, Hill has evolved into a forward-thinking, coeducational boarding and day school known for its rigorous, yet balanced academics; highly qualified, dedicated faculty; and stellar arts and athletics programs. The School has continually adapted to meet the needs of its students while remaining steadfast in its core values of truth, respect, and personal responsibility.
Set on more than 200 acres in Pottstown, Hill’s campus reflects both tradition and progress, with iconic, historic buildings such as its Alumni Chapel, Dining Hall, and Hunt Upper School Dormitory standing among modern facilities, such as the Center For The Arts and the Shirley Quadrivium Center that support innovative teaching and learning. Across the globe, the School’s impressive alumni network of more than 9,500 spans generations and vocations, united by a shared Hill experience that fosters both a commitment to lifelong learning and serving the common good.
Proud to be part of Pottstown, The Hill has been partnering with Pottstown in its growth, economy, service, and revitalization efforts since its founding. Today, the School remains one of the borough’s largest employers, contributes significantly through local taxes and business partnerships, and brings a global community of students and families who actively support the local economy. Beyond its economic impact, Hill invests in the community through financial aid for local students, sustained support of initiatives like Hobart’s Run and meaningful contributions to area nonprofits and revitalization efforts. Through volunteerism, philanthropy, and shared access to its campus resources, the School and its students, employees, and alumni continue a longstanding tradition of being a good neighbor to Pottstown.
Looking Ahead: The Next 175 Years
As The Hill marks this milestone anniversary, it also looks forward with purpose and ambition with the launch of its Strategic Plan: The People, The Place, The Journey.
Key priorities for the future include: Enhancing interdisciplinary and experiential learning opportunities; strengthening global engagement and cultural competency; investing in faculty excellence and professional development; expanding resources to ensure access for talented students from all backgrounds; and continuing to cultivate a community rooted in integrity, curiosity, and compassion.
“The 175th anniversary is both a celebration and a call to action,” said Head of School Kathleen Devaney. “With this celebration, we honor the generations who built this extraordinary institution, and we renew our commitment to prepare students to lead lives of purpose in a changing world.”
A Year of Celebration: May through June 2027
Following the Founder’s Day kickoff anniversary programming, May 1-2, The Hill will continue its celebration throughout the 2026–2027 academic year, including on-campus and off-campus alumni events, special exhibits, and opportunities for the extended Hill (Pottstown) community to engage with the School’s history and future.
