The Hill School is pleased to announce the appointment of Bill Stiles as the School’s next Director of Athletics and Co-Curricular Activities, effective July 1, 2025.
“Bill is a passionate educator with a proven track record of success in athletics administration who will help Hill maintain and ultimately enhance our athletics and co-curricular programs,” shared Meigs Family Head of School Kathleen Devaney.
Stiles will replace Seth Eilberg, who is stepping away from this role and joining The Hill’s Office of Institutional Giving. Eilberg will continue to serve as head coach of the boys’ varsity basketball program, a role he has held for 24 years.
Stiles is a seasoned Athletics Director with over 26 years of experience managing and supervising athletics, student life, and recreation programs. For the past 16 years, he has served as the Associate Vice President/Director of Athletics and Recreation at Alvernia University (Reading, Pa.), where he oversees 33 athletics programs and 43 full-time employees. His leadership has resulted in numerous championships, increased student-athlete GPAs, and most importantly, seen clear growth in community outreach and engagement.
At Alvernia, Stiles oversaw the completion of the university’s first Athletics & Recreation Strategic Plan, which has guided the department for the last 10 years; managed almost $50 million in athletics facility construction, renovation, and upgrades; program development, including the addition of women’s golf, men’s and women’s indoor & outdoor track & field, men’s volleyball, women’s equestrian, football, women’s ice hockey, men's wrestling as well as women's wrestling, men's NCAA ice hockey, women's triathlon, and women's bowling as varsity sports; and managed a number of new initiatives including a nickname change and rebranding the university’s mascot from the Crusaders to the Golden Wolves.
In addition, Stiles served as an adjunct professor in sport management and a member of the Alvernia Planning and Advisory Committee (APAC), Extended Cabinet, Retention Council, United Way Committee, Faculty/Staff Campaign Committee, Thoughtful Assessment Group (TAG), Middle States Steering Committee (Standard Chair, Student Support Services), and Search Committees for the Director of Admissions, and Vice President for Academic Affairs/Provost positions.
Stiles also serves on the Board of Directors for the Children’s Home of Reading, where he chairs the Program Planning Committee, and the Parish Council at St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish.
Very involved in the NCAA Governance Structure, Stiles was recognized by his peers in the Middle Atlantic Conference as the 2021 recipient of the Lou Sorrentino Award – presented to an athletics administrator who has a sustained influence in conference and national affairs and embodies the NCAA Division III Philosophy.
Prior to Alvernia, Stiles served as the Director of Athletics at Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia from 2004 to 2009. He also was Assistant Athletic Director at Chowan (N.C.) University from 1998-99 and Assistant Athletic Director/Assistant Baseball Coach at Ursinus College from 1999 to 2004.
Stiles is a 1996 graduate of Ursinus College, where he was an All Centennial Conference baseball student-athlete. He earned his master’s degree in sport management from Temple University in 1998. He and his wife, Jackie, have two children, Brynn and Will. The family will move to campus this summer.
"I am thrilled to be joining The Hill School community to lead its esteemed athletics and co-curricular programs,” said Stiles. “Hill's commitment to holistic education and the development of student-athletes aligns perfectly with my values, and I am eager to contribute to this vibrant community."
