The Hill School to Construct State-of-the-Art Football Stadium

The Hill School is pleased to announce a new and upcoming state-of-the-art football facility designed to re-imagine the player and fan experience. Madden Stadium offers an artificial turf field, lights for night games, scoreboard with full-color video display, enclosed press box and filming platform, and seating capacity for 700. Located in the heart of The Hill’s outdoor athletics complex at the Far Fields, and adjacent to the Lehrman Pavilion, Price and Cunningham Fields, and the Hauser Track and Field complex, Madden Stadium will serve as the centerpiece for Hill’s outdoor sports competition and offer flexibility in hosting a variety of athletics and campus events year-round.

“Built on the legacy of great Hill football players, coaches, and teams, Madden Stadium will help to restore the prominence of Hill Football and create a solid foundation for its future,” says Meigs Family Head of School Zachary G. Lehman P’16 ’18. “Hill players, coaches, and alumni are proud of the program’s rich history and tradition, and current and future players will now take to the field each day in a befitting setting, ready to write the next chapter in Hill’s football legacy. A very special thanks to Pat Madden '82 P’17 for his unyielding support of Hill Athletics and for making this long-awaited project a reality for our community.”

The decision regarding the location of the new complex was made after careful and thoughtful consideration. While Hill’s iconic Dell Field, home of Hill Football and Lacrosse for nearly a century was initially studied, it became evident that it could not meet the expansive needs of the new facility due to irrigation and erosion issues, its confined location, and corresponding construction costs. Of note, Hill Lacrosse moved from Dell Field to the Far Fields in 2014 after the completion of the Price and Cunningham Turf Fields.

“Countless unforgettable and historic Hill sports moments happened on Dell Field. And those moments will only be strengthened by the excitement of creating new memories for Hill Football and our other teams in a first-in-class stadium able to accommodate the entire School community,” notes Wilbur C. Riley Director of Athletics and Co-Curricular Programs Seth Eilberg P’22 ’23 ’25. “Dell Field will remain part of Hill’s celebrated athletics history and a place of victory, as Hill defeated Lawrenceville 10 to 6 on November 6 to end the 2021 football season -- the perfect way to close the chapter on this special venue.”

“Our Hill Football family is excited to play in Madden Stadium under the lights this upcoming season,” says Head Football Coach Orlando Patterson. “I am personally grateful for all the hard work behind the scenes that will allow us to enjoy such an amazing facility and bolster our program.”

We are grateful to Patrick W. Madden ’82 P’17, David Garner ’76 P’99, Frank Puccio ’66, Scott Granowski ’79, John Gvodas ’88 P’16 ’20 ’21, Mark Richardson ’79, Kirwan Elliott ’98, and the estate of Alan Reed ’51 for their generous support to make this complex a reality for The Hill School.
